If you can answer yes to any of these questions, this training is for you.
• Are you a senior, middle, frontline manager, superintendent, supervisor or worker who is involved with the authorization or endorsement process in the development of safe work procedures (JSA, JHA /SOP) at your company?
• Are you a business owner /manager who is trying to protect their company or organization from liability issues arising from workplace incidents, or just thinking about starting the inevitable process of developing, reviewing and or updating safe work methods or procedures (JSA, JHA /SOP) at your workplace?
• Are you a trainer or training organization delivering any form of safety training services ( Confined Space, Working at Heights, First Aid, Driver Training, Fatigue Management, PTW to name a few). *Hazard ID & Risk Management knowledge is and should be, not only an integral part of, but the very foundation of any and all safety trainer’s deliveries.
• Do you employ safety professionals, or do your workers form and act as members on your safety committee and you want them to have an in-depth comprehension to steer the development of risk management strategies in your workplace?
• Are you a safety professional who is looking to enhance your ability to contribute more to the operations team or company’s safety program and or strategies, or would simply like to know how to help bridge the gap between safety and technical /operations?
• Would you like to act as an independent HSE risk management consultant?
• Are you a student who is enrolled in a trade’s course and even though some of this material is presented in the safety modules would like to start your career with an enhanced comprehension of how various risk mitigation strategies work and can affect the workplace?
This training can and would benefit everyone at any level, not limited only to the oil and gas Industries but equally effective for construction sites and local business as well.

WHY IS THIS TRAINING DIFFERENT FROM OTHER RISK MANAGEMENT COURSES?
I have been working in high risk environments for over 35 years. Primarily the oil and gas fields of Western Canada and Australia, as well as construction projects in the off seasons. As you can imagine, I have been witness to many serious incidents and accidents through the years. From a time where safety or training did not even exist to an age where due diligence /duty of care and liabilities are becoming everything. Providing safe workplaces for workers is the future and my passion. It is becoming harder and harder to justify injuries in the workplace. Even though injury stats seem to have dropped slightly, nothing much seems to have changed by looking at the present TRIF rate across some companies. We keep re-inventing safety (more systems, more training, more accountability and so on) for the sake of safety. What’s going wrong? Can we do better? Yes we can. I can only speak from my own experience, but first of all, even to date this type of training scarcely exists. 15 years ago I attended my first safety training seminar put on by a large energy services company that I worked for at the time, and have attended a few more through the years, and they all had the same things in common. The speaker posted a slide of the hierarchy of controls, spoke about them for a bit, then an exercise. Then a while later a slide of a risk matrix or calculator and then on to JSA, JHA /SOP development. Sound familiar to anyone? Yes and of course most of them covered profiling using the disc model as behavior based safety was, and still is a big thing. I must admit that I did enjoy this type of training as I was learning bits here and there but really did not understand what it all meant or better yet how to use these tools. I did have a sizeable safety tool box, but had a lock on it so to speak.
After gaining my OHS, training /assessment and technical qualifications I was pretty sure that I was starting to figure out what was missing. I was operating as the Training and Assessment Manager for a large international energy services company in Australia. I was responsible for most of the competency assessments and the gap training (OHS & technical) needs of over 300 workers from entry level up to the Line /Rig Managers. One of the first questions within the risk management units asked as a part of the gap analysis prior to the issuing of a qualification was, what are the hierarchy or order of controls? Also keep in mind that if you do not know what they are, how can you truly know what level of control is achieved? Most of the workers had received the above mentioned risk management training and virtually no one could answer the question, not even most of the safety advisors on site. Not much different than my experience in Canada. How could this be? With all the training received by everyone, what was going on? It was at this point that I knew that I had figured it out. Even though everyone had the training in the past the same as I had years earlier, it did not make sense to them. It wasn’t that we were not exposed to all of the components during training, the problem was that they were not delivered in a way that the workers could understand completely or apply.
As a result I developed a framework for delivery of these items in a way that is easy to understand and truly integrates the various safety components & controls into the technical aspects of the tasks being performed. We know the “WHAT” of it, but this is more so the WHY and HOW! !
