Kala Ranch

Kala Ranch breeds & raises registered Black Angus cattle without the use of steroids /hormones. We sell 2 yr old bulls that are vet checked & semen tested.

We started Kala Ranch soon after BSE hit and because of BSE. Everybody thought we were nuts! But because we love our Alberta steak, we wanted to know what was in our beef and that it would always be a safe product.

So, with one little pail bunter left for dead at the local feedlot, Kala Ranch's herd was born. Then the neighbour sold out (BSE + drought = cattle industry on life support) and we bought a PB Registered Black Angus cow /calf pair and a calf.

Slowly over 11 years we've grown, selling off our best bulls for sires and holding back our heifers. We calve in May and June. We don't use growth hormones, steroids or daily antibiotics. But we do vaccinate and treat the sick /injured ones as necessary. To not do so would be inhumane, contrary to strict organic definition.

We also don't push our upcoming breeding bulls! Our philosophy is that they shouldn't melt out on the breeding pasture, the legs and feet need to stay sound and we don't want them to die early of liver cirrhosis. Our customers are commercial cattlemen and the only sales men we employ are the bulls themselves. Our bulls are 2 yr olds when they're sold, vet checked and semen tested.

2 country kids who came back into the game, building our ranch from absolutely nothing, starting in our 40's! And yes, we still have that first pail bunter! Her name is Abby.
