Ken Wessel Family Counselling provides individual, couple [conjoint] , and family therapy. Instead of a traditional 50-minute-hour offered by most therapists, we offer 75 minute sessions. We are collaborative, forward thinking, and mindful in our work with families in conflict. Our services are normally delivered at our downtown Edmonton office, in Scotia Place Tower 1 (Suite 2020 - 10060 Jasper Avenue), but can be tailored to the family home, facilities where staff teams work with families, or remotely to venues where services are hard to find. In addition to traditional face-to-face counselling, we offer services by telephone or video. Our theoretical orientation is grounded in Ecological-Systems Theory (Human-Ecological Theory), which considers each person within the context of their whole, unique environment. We understand everyone is part of a greater whole, such as friends, neighbours, intimate partners, parents, siblings, employers, and colleagues. Everyone needs support to survive and thrive. We also understand that each of us is fundamentally different from others, with distinct biology, mind, and circumstances. A predictable tension arises between a person's want or need for individualism and independence, and their want or need for belonging and community. We invite clients to examine personal difficulties and explore relationships, with a goal of clearly differentiating themselves and their needs from others, while negotiating and practicing healthy inter-dependence within a community of those they need and love. Our methodology facilitates processes to help individuals enhance their quality of life and improve functioning. We are directly informed by the individuals we serve, as we collaborate to create visions and goals, identify and address needs and barriers, develop strategies to achieve goals, and ensure natural, enduring supports are in place to sustain results.
