About Language Centre For Newcomers (Lcfn)

The Language Centre for Newcomers (LCFN) is a non-profit charitable society which bridges the gap immigrants, war-affected refugees, newcomers and immigrant youth face when transitioning to life in Canada.

Language Centre For Newcomers (Lcfn) Description

The Centre is designed for the newcomers, immigrants, and refugee communities, as well as war-affected adults, and other immigrants. Canadian citizens are also welcome to share the Centre’s community-based educational resources. The Centre’s mission is to welcome all segments of Canadian society through an inclusive and non-discriminatory approach.
At LCFN, our objectives are:
• To teach English as a Second Language (ESL) skills to immigrants, newcomers and refugees communities and develop the skills, information, and support they need for entry and continued success in the Canadian labour market;
• To promote literacy, life and soft skills training amongst all community members, including non-immigrants, for their successful integration into Canadian society and acquisition of Canadian citizenship;
• To help adults access basic education to overcome the barrier of being beyond the traditional age to attend regular Canadian high schools;
• To promote dignity, self-respect, and higher self-esteem among immigrant community members so that they can rebuild their future in Canada after spending decades in refugee camps;
• To work towards the elimination of illiteracy in Canada’s Newcomers and non-immigrant community with support and partnership from the Federal Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta;
• To take advantage of community-based education as the best means of facilitating access to accurate, timely and useful knowledge transfer and skills-based learning for the empowerment of all segments of Canadian society;
• To take a gender-sensitive operational approach that actively promotes both genders in the attainment of their educational goals;
• To facilitate access and reduce barriers for immigrants and newcomers to timely and useful settlement-related information as they attempt to participate in settlement programs, and to increase awareness of the settlement process and services available in Canada;
• To provide vulnerable groups such as refugees, war-affected populations, and refugee claimants in Canada with accessible education in English language skills for the first time in their lives;
• To assist ESL learners in developing life-skills needed to function in Canadian society;
• To facilitate the development of necessary language capacities for newcomers which foster a dialogue between them and other Canadian citizens, leading to an enhanced appreciation for Canada’s diversity; and
• To assist recent newcomers, immigrants, refugees and Canadian citizens overcome barriers to integration and employment.
