Lieutenant Governor'S Circle On Mental Health & Addiction Description

Mission

The Lieutenant Governor's Circle on Mental Health and Addiction strives to:

1. Recognize and honour Albertans who help improve the lives of individuals and families living with mental illness and addiction.

2. Increase the public understanding of mental illness and addiction through public forums, written communication, social media, private media and speaking opportunities.

3. Host or sponsor public events that provide credible information on the nature, prevalence and successful treatment of mental illness and addiction.

4. Bring the dignity and ceremony of the Lieutenant Governor's office to the issue of mental health and addiction, with the goal of reducing stigma.

Vision

The Lieutenant Governor’s Circle on Mental Health and Addiction is working with other like-minded stakeholders to make Alberta a province in which all residents can live well; without shame or stigma and with the knowledge and resources they need to achieve and maintain good mental health.

Goals

The Lieutenant Governor’s Circle on Mental Health and Addiction’s goals are:

1. To strive to prevent and relieve mental illness and mental disability by establishing an annual awards program to encourage and recognize significant achievement by individuals and organizations in improving programs and treatments for individuals living with mental illness and /or addiction;

2. To encourage innovation in mental illness and addiction treatment through the annual awards program;

3. To protect and promote improved mental health by sponsoring lectures, seminars, and symposia – some suitable for accreditation – on topics relating to various aspects of mental health and /or addiction for professionals in health care, the non-profit sector, as well as members of the general public;

4. To reduce stigma and discrimination against persons with mental illness and addiction by encouraging public discussion through media and social media of the best ways to improve mental health;

5. To collaborate with other individuals and organizations on initiatives to broaden public awareness and understanding of mental health and addiction issues to achieve the above objects; and,

6. To solicit and receive donations, bequests, legacies and grants and to enter into agreements and contracts for the attainment of the above objects.
