I stopped at my favourite charity shop in St. Albert — Lo-Se-Ca — a place run by volunteers and participants of the workshops of Lo-Se-Ca this place is a gem! Unfortunately there were some “people” trying to confuse the volunteers at the checkout, one of the volunteers is a sweet, young woman who is also a participant at Lo-Se-Ca. She was very flustered and became upset as the woman paying for her items kept “questioning” the prices being charged and her “discount”. For the month of February all adult clothing is $1.00, kids is something like .25¢, many of the clothes are brand name and still have tags on them! So really, you are trying to “steal or bargain down” these prices? Apparently, this woman and her cohort who was sitting on her butt on the only chair in the store thought so and did so by trying to confuse the volunteers (two older ladies) and belittle the young woman. I could hear what was going on, knew exactly what was going on and the situation was not helped by some woman behind the “rude/inconsiderate” woman as she kept plaintively repeating “I need to get back to work now, how long is this going to take, can I just pay now, whine?” (There is only one register and it is not simple to suspend or void a purchase in process, which is what the worrier about her discount and cohort no doubt wanted.) At this point, the young woman was crying and visibly upset (the older volunteers were also upset and befuddled) so I went up to the sweet woman and tried to calm her down. I CANNOT stand by and tolerate anyone being bullied and harassed. I kept repeating to the young woman that nothing was her fault that being upset was understandable but she is so awesome and helpful that I always try to get her at the register. I asked her to look me in the eye (if she could and she did) to see how sincere I was. One of the more experienced volunteers drew her away and alerted the manager. I was so furious with the customer(s), the two that kept going on about this and that discount and that they were “told” they could have this and that item for a far lower price than marked and for the too hurried and self-absorbed customers that showed no compassion (decency!) for the young woman.

The manager (Sharon) walked by in one of the back areas and we chatted (we donate here, I love to support NPOs and I try to pick up items for Mum when I can because $1.00 or 50% of $4.00 is so great) so I know the manager. I told her my observations of the situation and what she said reinforced why I love this organization! She said that she advised all the volunteers if such a situation occurred again to come and get her immediately and if warranted she would ban/ask the harassing customer to leave.

I have never worked retail but I know a thing a two about customer service (every job should utilize this IMO) and good management practices and Sharon at Lo-Se-Ca totally GETS IT! Impressive and heartening to hear and witness.
