About Magpie & Stump

Taco Eatery, Tequila Drinkery

Magpie & Stump Description

A local Banff tradition for over 30 years

The Magpie and Stump is Banff’s premier destination for locals and visitors looking for a rustic, fun-loving and care-free atmosphere for fantastic food and drinks. From the moment you saunter into our rustic cantina you’ll feel a warm sense of welcome. Aged barnboard walls covered with vintage Mexican kitch and classic neon beer signs make us the coolest spot in town for families and hipsters of all ages. We make our tacos fresh and take our tequila extremely seriously.

Tacos.

For over 30 years we’ve been serving up authentic and fresh Mexican cuisine to locals and gringos alike. We pride ourselves on being Alberta’s original Mexican Restaurant. All of our delicious Mexican inspired entrees and salsas are made fresh daily using the finest chilis and flavourful spices. From classics like flautas, chimis, enchiladas, 1lb burritos, quesadillas and fajitas to contemporary entrees like our mole chicken wings and fried chicken verde you can make your dining experience as spicy as you like it.

Tequila.

A cantina in a ski town? Obviously. The Magpie and Stump is Banff’s number one ski bum bar. Sit down next to local pro skiers and boarders enjoying some laughs and stories over glacier-ice cold cervezas, tequilas or our ever popular Magger-ritas.

Wonderful staff. Very friendly. Great food. We had our dog with us. Sat outside on the patio. Got all 3 of us waters. Would return again.

Went there with a group of friends....the staff and management were so fun and personable! The staff are some of the best in Banff! Thank you so much for the good laughs and all your tolerance!!! Hahaha!

This place is great and the food is brilliant. Service is second to none and we always walk away happy and full! Margarita’s are

Stopped in for a quick Bulldog and some nachos before we headed to the Grizzly House. Worst idea ever! We should have just stayed at the Magpie & Stump for dinner and more drinks. The nachos here were better than our $55+ plates at The Grizzly House.

Ordered Rellanos and Queso... both were terribly delicious; I felt complete again! Will definitely return! Cozy place inside with few street side tables outside, but a rooftop patio is in the works!

User

I love this place. Bar seat, peanuts, margaritas and cheap authentic tacos is the best way to day drink in town. As a local, I always recommend people to go in. Save me a seat at the bar. Ps. Ditch the straws ;-)

User

I had the battered stuffed deep fried red peppers meal and omg it was delicious. My gf had the enchilada meal which was superb as well. We plan to make Banff a regular thing and this restaurant will not be forgotten. Thanks for the great meal and friendly service!

User

Great food great service great beer .... Lucky to get in when we did place had queue of about 50 people when came out ...says it all really x

User

Always been a treat to drop by for a Big Jar ! See the crew and we called it the office after work for small draft in a big jar ....

This is my go to place in Banff, for the least several decades. Ordered the enchiladas and hubby ordered the biggest friggin' burrito known to mankind. Great as always. Mango margarita was super on a hot, smoky day. Loved the guac, salsa and chips too. My only complaint was the table, chairs and menus could really do with wiping down between customers. Not super appealing to sit down to a dirty table. We will be back though, maybe cleanwipes in hand if necessary.

I ordered two tacos, one beef braised and the other chicken. It was very good but the portion was very small. If it wasn't for the nachos and guacamole that I ordered previously. I would've still been hungry....I found it was not enough food for me to consider it a meal.

User

I enjoyed my experience, but was surprised at the price for guacamole. It was good, but I don't think I'd get it again ( a 1/2 cup serving is $10). Otherwise, I liked the food, service and atmosphere. As a Latin music lover and dancer, the music was great!

User

Awesome food & great service. Guacamole side dishes to go with our food was way overpriced at $10.50 per bowl. Should have asked before we ordered 3!!

User

We love to eat here when staying or passing through Banff. Atmosphere and service always awesome. We order the guacamole, and soft tacos to be gluten free. Normally they are super tasty. This time however the guacamole was bland and my chicken tacos had zero flavour. So disappointed. Rice was good though.

User

This has been a favourite of ours for ever....Stopped by on Tuesday, and ordered the burrito. It was not great. Had some green stuff squirted over the top. I guess that was suppose to be the guacamole. The server was awesome, and the atmosphere is fun. Just please serve some real guacamole with Mexican.

User

The food was forgettable, service below average, cost was at the high end of acceptable. I do not like drinking from a mason jar (no other option given). The gross part was the tops of the hot sauce bottles were crusty and filthy obviously never wiped off. There are a ton of other choices, feel free to pass on this one.

User

Magpie and Stump used to be something to write home about. It was just average - food used to be way better and more substantial. It was enough to fill you up after eating a half bucket of peanuts in the bar, but not much extra. Needs to go back to how it was 8 to 10 years ago!

User

Atmosphere was awesome, service was good for a busy Saturday night. Food wasn't the best but the guacamole was good (I am not usually a fan but decided to try it). My boyfriend is gluten intolerant and he made that very clear when ordering and ended up getting really sick almost immediately after leaving the restaurant (even though the server assured him he would be ok, probably a case of cross contamination). If I go back it would just be for drinks, the vibe is still really cool. But I could definitely spend the $71.00 on a better meal, and no sick boyfriend.

User

Food and drink were fantastic but our server stunk. I had to keep finding him for drinks or to tell him we are ready to pay. This was interrupting his leaning at the bar talking to fellow staff members.
