DIY musicians, you know who you are! I am not here to call you out, I get it. You don't see the value/need for getting your band into a big fancy studio. To read more please visit https://www.modifyfx.ca/…/the-diy-band- s-guide-to-diy-recor…

Hello my friends! Today is all about Microphones (its about gear as promised!!)
This is a quick intro and recommendation to microphones, there is literally hundreds of hours of youtube videos and thousands of pages dedicated to mics, their uses, pros and cons, etc.,. They all have their own unique sound. Plenty of choices out there to drive the DIY studio band insane! I will not wade into the mud of the eternal “which microphone is the best” debate, there are enough gear...

Last week we talked about the very bare basics of DIY recording. Primarily about the room and how it can potentially leave its sonic qualities baked into your sound. We are also roughly went over how we can start to combat the unwanted harsh reverb. I also foolishly left out a couple of things that you also need for self recording, you will need interface. The interface is what allows to take outside sounds recorded by a mic and writes it to a computer, I would suggest th...

DIY musicians, you know who you are! I am not here to call you out, I get it. You don't see the value/need for getting your band into a big fancy studio. You are worried about modern production techniques diluting your vision. There is nothing wrong with that! I am the same way, I would rather teach myself how to do things and gain more skills that I place within my music toolbox. What I am here is to share my observations, opinions and tactics of what I have experience...d over my short audio career. I will be posting about different instruments over the next few weeks to keep the length of these articles to a min.
About me. My name is Bryant and I have been a bassist in various punk and metal bands around Edmonton for the past 7 years. I started to teach myself how to record the punk band, Newschooled in the winter of 2017. This awoken a passion within me to find the best way to record bands within the confine of their houses/jamspaces and how to overcome less than optimal environments. I will take some time now to stress that this all my own opinion formed by my personal experiences. Please take everything I say here with a grain of salt. Try them out for yourselves and see if they work for you! Let me know! Also, you can check out www.modifyfx.ca to see my methods at work.
The basics. First off, we will start with the basics. You do not need thousands of dollars for gear, we are fortunate enough in edmonton to have many high quality music equipment stores that rent. You do need one semi modern laptop at the minimum, you will need an interface and some headphones. I will not go through all of what you need in this post but I will in future posts.
Now that we have the basic equipment, we have to address the, ahem, elephant in the room, the room itself. Most bands will have their jamspace either in a small concrete box, a garage or an unfinished basement. The biggest enemy will be the reverb that will be baked into the space. Its the No.1 ingredient in getting that “amateur” sound. Now, the good news is that you do not need to do extensive renovations in order to get your room under control. Good thick blankets on the walls (matresses are even better) and good outdoor carpets laid over chipboard on the floors will go a long way in solving this issue.
Next week we continue on how we can combat unwanted reverb and artist mindset!
