Muttart Conservatory Description

One of Edmonton’s most iconic structures, the Muttart Conservatory offers a year-round escape into the beauty of the world’s plant life.

Vibrant, colourful, tranquil and inspirational, the pyramids’ display gardens are a welcome oasis for all.

Designed by award-winning Canadian architect Peter Hemingway, the Muttart Conservatory officially opened in September 1976. The Muttart Foundation donated half of the Conservatory's original $2 million construction cost. The City of Edmonton and the Province of Alberta provided the balance of funding.

In the wild, its bright flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds. Its currently in flower in our Temperate pyramid. The red, long, tubular flowers look beautiful. Come take a look!

Fossil records show that the Ginkgo, also known as a Maidenhair tree, has been on this planet for over 200 million years! The Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) tree is the last living species of the Ginkgophyta phylum, some believe that the reason for the extinction of the Ginkgo relatives has to do with dinosaurs being responsible for the seed dispersal and when they became extinct these plants could no longer survive. What do you think?

User

This sneaky plant uses nectar to attract insects into its cup shape. Once inside the insects drown and are digested by the plant! You can find this carnivorous pitcher plant (nepenthes alata) by the entrance on the left of the tropical pyramid.

In this rainy weather, let Craspedia remind you of sunnier times with its round, yellow flowers reminiscent of little suns. Craspedia is currently on display at the Lost in Space exhibit in Feature; check us out and have a stellar day!

User

Check out our Temperate Pyramid for a ton of fruits hanging out just like these pomegranates! To learn some interesting history about the pomegranate and many more fruiting trees, stop by for a tour this afternoon!

User

Plants can have interesting names based on what they look like. One example is the Tacca chantrieri, also called a black bat flower, found in the Tropical pyramid. It is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, and it is an understory plant, which means they don't require too much sunlight.
Can you see the bat-shaped flower with long whiskers?

We were just there yesterday. There were 12 of us, 7 kids and 5 adults. We really, really enjoyed it!! The best part that we liked is the Canada 150 theme. The kids really liked the place and so us, the adults. We will definitely go back again next year. I will recommend this place to everybody!! It is so relaxing to be there!!!

User

We had our Wedding services here. It was a magical ceremony! The staff is FANTASTIC.

User

The kids loved seeing the differenct pyramids. We went for the halloween event and it was fun for the kids and the staff were very friendly and great with the kids.

The Muttart Conservatory is such a treat in the cold winter months! The feature pyramid always ends up being our favourite. The summer we love to see the gardens outside, they’re gorgeous!

User

It's been a few years since my last visit to the Muttart Conservatory and I had never visited during Christmas. What treat to see the beautiful colours of poinsettias all over the pyramid. Of course, the Tropical display is still my favourite The renovation added a lot of charm and the café is a great addition. Nice little break from the terrible winter cold.

User

I love this place. One of my favourite things in Edmonton, annual Membership is 100% worth it. It’s a lovely quick afternoon visit to enjoy some beautiful plants and creative displays feature displays.

User

I love the muttart. The feature pyramid isn't always the most exciting. But I love the tropical pyramid. I love how there are the Latin labels underneath because I'm a plant nerd and like to learn new things when I go.

User

I love coming here and spending time with the plants. This week is the first time I saw the garden outside and it was just as beautiful as the inside.

User

Hidden gem in the middle of the city. We especially loved the Canada 150 theme this year. Beautiful mix of plants and art. I think I have found my happy place

User

Great for amateur photographers and botany enthusiasts alike! A decent restaurant for a snack and a modest gift shop. Rotating seasonal displays.

User

Everything was so pretty!! Loved all the hidden statues to find! Next time I'm in Edmonton I want to come back!!

User

Enjoyed seeing all the displays on each of the pyramids. Started our visit with a wedding party being sung to in their native language as they exit the building. I asked a couple what country they were from & he said Atria in Africa.

User

Beautiful place to spend the day. Four glass pyramids, Arid, temperate, tropical and a feature pyramid that is changed many times a year, A must see, when you are in Edmonton, Alberta.

User

A lovely spot in the river valley to spend a few hours. Also a terrific restaurant (Culina) to share a soup and a glass of wine for lunch.

User

A beautiful landmark in Edmonton - I would recommend it to anyone that has a love for plants. I can't wait to visit again.

User

Was just there yesterday taking a friend that hadn't been there yet. I have been blessed to go multiple times. I was however disappointed with the featured Canada's 150 decore. Pretty but I myself thought there could've been a lot more imaginative thought and effort put into it. Still pretty but because I've been to th Muttart at different times of the season is was somewhat disappointing, compared to other displays.

User

I Live in a tropical country, so Muttart is beautiful, but not different from what we have.

There is a seasonal exposition which I could not see, but I believe its pretty neat.

The neighborhood around is gourgeous and you can Go through a very nice walk till downtown.

User

We love coming to the Muttart and have a annual family pass. One thing i find EXTEMELY frustrating (and have for the entire 5 years that weve had the annual pass), we come to see the feature pyramid. Every Saturday at various times of thr day, its closed for weddings, photo sessions and so on. Its a HUGE waste of our time and money to come and not be able to get in to the feature pyramid or be told by staff that we have to wait an hour and a half to get in.

Ive mentioned a number of times to the staff that it sure would be nice to know ahead of time. I lve suggested they post it on their web site or FB the times that it will be closed. Then other people could plan their visits accordingly. I often bring my disabled aunt with us and its not an easy task onlu to arrive and find out we cant access the feature pyramid for 1.5 hrs... Muttart... i don't understand why you refuseto help people preplan their visits by posting closures!!! Is it because you dont want to lose money??? You want people to come anyways???

User

I took a Ukrainian egg class at the Muttart conservatory with my mother hoping to make a special memory. It was terrible! The Muttart did not schedule the classes properly and kicked us out veru rudely before we were finished. I wasted $80 on that class and have NOTHING to show for it.
