Nadine'S Wood Studio Description
Welcome! My name is Nadine and I am a High School Mathematics teacher in Calgary, Alberta. I have always taken an interest in handicrafts, cooking and baking and woodworking. From an early age, I was inspired by my artistic, dedicated and industrious parents. Woodworking became a passion of mine when I discovered the scroll saw.
Growing up in Calgary, I feel a close connection to the Rocky Mountains. My family's European background exposed me to the woodworking cottage industry in Germany. My love for nature and my heritage has inspired my style as an artist.

New pieces!!
I’m donating one piece to Father Lacombe ‘s Laser Nation Silent Auction to support our students who could not otherwise afford athletics! Which one should I donate?! I’m having a bit of a crisis 🙈
“Roaming I” and “Roaming II” having trees in various woods (Black Walnut, Oak, Mahogany and Shedua) mounted to old Christmas Tree stumps! The Black and Grizzly Bear are cut from Wenge and Shedua, respectively.

Sometimes the best way to unwind after a busy week is to go home and bake chocolate cupcakes! I had leftover chocolate icing so I made Raspberry Cream Cheese Port Icing to supplement... made too much and I still have Chocolate icing 😬💃 And the cycle continues!!
Spent my weekend having some quality time with my paper knife in preparation for my next project... I’m excited to get started!! Stay tuned 😊
“Quiet Strength”
A wenge black bear lumbers through the snow laden pines, ironically (?) cut from poplar. The base is plum. We had to cut a large branch from our tree after a particularly nasty snowstorm (dubbed Snowtember by my fellow Calgarians). Nothing goes to waste at my house. The branch has been curing nicely for a few years and waiting for the perfect piece!

“The Three Sisters” Bookends
Thank you to my friend Sierra for asking me to make these unique bookends. I’m so thankful that I got to be a part of your Christmas celebration!
The bookends are made of black walnut, with the iconic Three Sisters Mountain range cut into the top. The yellow heart (larches), arariba, sedua and padauk lend themselves perfectly to fall colours. A lone black bear, cut from wenge, meanders through the forest.

“Flower of Christmas”
A single poinsettia cut into maple and backed with Mahogany. This is the quintessential flower of the Christmas season. How do you like the new design? Having the backing slightly larger gave the piece its own frame.

"Once Upon a Tree" bookends
Wow! How long has it been?! I've been away from posting for 3 months! Where did the time go?!?
As some of you know, I'm a teacher! August saw me to a (well deserved in my unbiased opinion) holiday to Europe and then it was back to work 1 day after landing back home!
... In the spirit of thinking about things I haven't done in a while, here is the matching and complete bookend set! Only 5 (Or so) years in the making!! I really need to work on my procrastination... later 😁

"Summer Melody"
Hollyhocks, columbines and petunias are favourites of the stunning little hummingbirds that can be seen flitting through our gardens this time of year. Cut into maple and backed with Jatoba, the body of the hummingbird is African Mahogany while the one wing is Arariba. Finally, one columbine has some brass stamen detailing.

"Family Tree II"
I had the great pleasure in making a second piece for my friend Alyssa. To accommodate the names of her aunts, uncles and cousins, I layered two trees cut from Black Walnut. I love the effect that the layered branches have. It gave the piece fantastic depth.

The second piece of my wheat series.
The wheat is cut into Yellowheart and backed with African Mahogany. I took a vertical piece and sliced into three panels. The variance from dark to light and back to dark ties the three pieces together.

This is the first piece in my wheat series. The second piece in the series is called "Prairie Sea Trio".
The wheat is cut into Yellowheart and backed with African Mahogany. The iridescence of the wood gives the feel of light peeking through the heads at sunrise or sunset.
