Must read for those with kids.

Such beautiful lyrics. The song has provided so much comfort to families who have experienced the devastation of losing a baby at any gestation or age.

Unfortunately, when faced with someone who has experienced loss, people are sometimes drawn to say cliché responses. Or just don't say anything, and don't acknowledge the person's pain.
What is a more appropriate response? "I am so sorry for your loss. How are you?"
Trying to add your own meaning and understanding of loss, to someone else's experience, is almost impossible. Instead, the use of active listening skills is a safer response.

The article highlights the importance of family dinners, especially involving your teenagers. Teens are a really vulnerable group for mental health challenges, and suicidal ideation. Suicide is the second most common cause of death in teens. The sooner this tradition of family dinners is introduced, the better, in my opinion. It helps kids of all ages to have a place to discuss stresses, concerns, worries, as well as celebrations in their life. I also recommend using active listening skills during dinner to encourage the communication channels to open for all. Google "active listening skills" if you are unsure!

The real OCD. N.B. it's not a cliché about being particular or perfectionistic! It can occur post-partum in a mother or father who has had no OCD symptoms previously. Yes, that's right, Dads could be affected too.

Those teens living near green spaces were less likely to have symptoms of depression.
Similar studies have shown that walking in green spaces is correlated with lowering symptoms of depression (in adults). More so than walking in the city.

I posted this article 4 years ago, and it's still incredibly important, but unfortunately it's an area that's not appreciated. It's worth a read with an open mind.

Beautiful excerpt for new year's eve from Neil Gaiman's journal:
"Be kind to yourself in the year ahead.
Remember to forgive yourself, and to forgive others. It's too easy to be outraged these days, so much harder to change things, to reach out, to understand.
... Try to make your time matter: minutes and hours and days and weeks can blow away like dead leaves, with nothing to show but time you spent not quite ever doing things, or time you spent waiting to begin.
Meet new people and talk to them. Make new things and show them to people who might enjoy them.
Hug too much. Smile too much. And, when you can, love."

Looking for good intentions in others, is a simple way of overriding our brain's innate negative bias. Our brain tends to ignore positive intentions, and highlights negative intentions.
Recognising positive intentions in others makes us feel safer, happier, and supported. It also makes others feel heard, appreciated and more inclined to treat us well.
