Royal Canadian Legion Branch 183

Branch History

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 183 acquired its Charter in 1946. Until they moved in to their hall, meetings were held in numerous locations: upstairs in the egg grading station, The Sample House which was located next to the Central Hotel and at the Old Bonnyville Town Hall.

The Branch moved in to their new hall in 1949. Being the first Service Club in town, the Hall was a centre of community activities.

For many years, the Branch sponsored the annual July 1st Festivities which included water skiing, water polo with boats, boat racing and baseball. At one time there was even airplane rides.

The Branch sponsored a base ball team starting in 1953 and became s sponsor of the local rodeo.

The Branch has always organized the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony and hosts the town at the Hall.

With the new millennium, the Legion Hall was starting to show it's age. It was determined that the building could not be economically repaired so the branch was left with a problem. Do they build a new hall or try to find an existing facility.

The branch was able to purchase the St. James Anglican Church for a reasonable price and renovate the building to be a perfect replacement. Although it was sad to leave the old hall, the old church rapidly became like home to the branch.
