I don't know what all the belly aching is about but I guess people just like to complain about everything because they have nothing better to do.. of course there is going to be big lines and large crowds all at once right after the place opens, everyone wants to check it out at the same time. If you were smart like me you would have waited a couple months to get your membership and avoid the growing pains at first. There wasn't one person in line when I picked up my membership and the process was very quick and painless. I will say however that I was caught off guard by the "joining fee". I totally missed it while looking at the website but I guess that's what happens when you have it hidden at the very bottom of a page, maybe make it a bit more obvious so no one else is caught off guard as well. Speaking of the website I can't seem to find The class schedules anywhere, at least not on my mobile phone. Maybe it's easier to find on the desktop site? The staff have been very friendly, the locker rooms are VERY clean and the floor is dry as well even during these muddy winter days. I basically got the membership for the gym which is awesome. The equipment is fantastic and there is tons of it as well. Even during peak times no one is fighting for space or equipment. One thing I guess I can agree on with some of the negative reviews is the size of the wave pool, hot tub and lazy river. It was a bit shocking to see them as small as they were and I'm not quite sure why they didn't make that area bigger, especially since it's probably the biggest money maker for the facility... anyhow so far so good and keep up the good work :)

User

What a gorgeous facility! My boys have been enjoying it almost daily since it opened and I was able to bring my youngest as well as my niece along last night.

Despite the growing pains I’ve heard about, we had an experience that exceeded what I was expecting based on prior comments I’ve read. The wave pool is having some technical problems and it’s busy but the confluence of New Years, the new facility, and three different promotions have made it very busy. People need to exercise patience with the facility and the staff.

The only thing I would suggest is staffing the gym during times when the teens are mostly there. Having a large group of kids together without supervision is a recipe for trouble and that almost happened the other night.

Outside of that - really enjoyed it - my 2 1/2 year old couldn’t stop giggling going down the waterslide in the little play area.

User

Was so excited to go as the city spent so much money on it. Very pretty to look at. I went to use the swimming pool with a child. First. The staff was very helpful as its huge and easy to get lost in. I liked the idea of using locks only so they don't charge you to use their lockers. Changing rooms are huge. Washrooms are private and big. The showers are private but the tap is horrible! So hard to shower. There is 1 slide which looks good. The little child was looking forward to the slide. IT WAS CLOSED because it costs to much to run during the day! What! We just spent millions on this and now we can't even use items inside this. The wave pool was good but small. The lazy river. I can see why its called lazy it doesn't even pull you around slowly. The water climb if i was good at that it would of been good. The climbing frame area is tiny. If you have a 3 year old or under its good but its tiny with a tiny slide. The big pool for lane swimming or swimming lessons looked good but didn't go in. Don't think ill return for swimming. Maybe for the theatre or skating. If you want a good swimming pool go to south land leisure. Huge slides and lots of them and great fun.

User

It’s ok but not that great.. pools are overcrowded.. studios for the drop in classes are quite small .. lifeguards are too rude.. they keep interrupting you and your kids. They are watching over every minute of your activity there..

User

Beautiful looking facility. The line up wasn’t that long but we wait was agonizing long time for drop in swimming. When we got to the front and found out the wave pool wasn’t open!! Our reason for coming - i looked up on line before coming and there was no mention of it being closed. This was very disappointing and made the pool(which was mostly only lane swimming)hot tub, 1 waterslide, lazy river extremely busy. Kids said they still prefer the leisure centre in the NE.

User

1. Huge line ups to get in.

2. Poor signage in the locker area, could onky find one change room.

3. Workout area is very good except when smaller kids are allowed in, throwing medicine balls around, rolling the exercise balls around, neither put away, playing around on the equipment, having the weights drop. Not sure where the parents were , thought for sure the staff staff would have spoken to the kids or the parents about proper behaviour.

4. Huge line ups to use the hot tub.

5. Kids running in and out of the steam room, again not supervised.

6. Pools very small.

Wish they would of spent more money on the inside and made bigger hot tubs and pools instead of what they spent on the design of the building.

User

Why exactly are you closing on Saturday night at "8:30"? I use quotes around 8:30 because at 7:30 the music was shut off. At 8:00 a person physically came to us as we walked on the track and asked us to leave.

What exactly are you thinking?

On Saturday night this was full of teenagers and families! This is a great addition to our community, but this is a big error. The facility should be open until 10:00. Give our children(members)a place that is safe and a positive alternative to drinking or partying. I am excited to be here and participate, but I can no longer be quiet. I hope someone is listening?

User

Went there with the kids and hubby to go swimming. It's new so the 15 minute wait to pay is understandable. Went to the family change room and because there's no where to put your boots the floors are dirty.

The kiddie pool is FREEZING, the wave pool was slightly above freezing. My toddler and 4 year old were shivering and kept asking to go to the hot tub. We must not have been the only ones to think that because everyone was trying to pack into the hot tub (which really wasn't very hot).

Overall, beautiful but too cold to enjoy swimming here will go somewhere else.

User

We went yesterday and stood in line for 30 minutes just to drop in. The registration process is way too long to be just dropping in. The wave “pool” was not open to the public due to murky water. And it is very small and disappointing. The hot tub was like warm and packed all the time. Kid area super crowded. The “lazy river “ doesn’t eve flow like at Genesis place in Airdrie. Kind of a disappointment for such a state of the art center. We will keep taking our kids to Airdrie, at least they have more going on for the pool and it’s not nearly as expensive. Good try YMCA but I don’t know if I will be a repeat customer for the pool but may look into your other programs.

User

Was so excited to visit this new YMCA. However was very disappointed with the experience. The building is amazing a lovely space. However there seams to be a lot of teething problems and poor management. Firstly had to queue for 20 mins to be checked in with a visitors pass while my family waited for me. The changing rooms were filthy dirty especially the showers and the changing cubicals. On entering the pool you are blasted with cold air, just what you need when it’s - 20 outside. The pools are great, however very poor signage of changing rooms when coming out and trying to get out of the locker room. Showers out of order and ones that are working the pressure is so bad, impossible to wash your hair under. When in the wave pool there were x 3 life guards all with their backs to the pool chating and not paying attention. Life guards uniform poor, shortest shorts with their butts hanging out.

Have been going to Eau Claire for over six years and it awesome, extreamy clean, staff are extreamly helpful and professional. Not the case here!

User

Was so excited for the swimming facilities at this location, however it is a huge disappointment.:

1. The hot tub is not hot, it is warm. Consequently people use it for their children to swim in and people sit in it for long periods of time. It is not therapeutic at all. It is either over crowded or there is a line up to sit in what is essentially a bath tub.

2. There is always something closed. We went on the weekend and the wave pool was closed because of a chemical problem, this seems to happen frequently. The main pool is too cold for kids to swim in so there were literally hundreds of people in the little kiddie pool and "hot" tub. No one was allowed in the area where the climbing wall was even though there wasn't a lesson going on.

3. Again, the hot tub is barely warm, and the main pool is freezing.

4. And then there are the lifeguards. I think this is the place where fun came to die. I understand that safety is an issue but honestly they are like drill sergeants.

5. When the wave pool is actually open it is way overcrowded because it is just too small.

Ultimately, my children don't want to go there, they would rather go to the Cochrane leisure center (amazing pool!) or the good old Melcor pool.

Other issues:

1. Water fountains: there is 1 water fountain in the whole facility, it is downstairs in the main gym. That's it. Compared to other facilities there are water fountains everywhere.

2. Locker rooms: there is no paper towel, only hand driers. Consequently, if someone spills something, or there is mud or anything that would normally be wiped up with paper towel, it just sits there being filthy. The locker rooms are beautiful and bright with tons of lockers but no where to put muddy boots.

This is truly a beautiful facility but if you are wanting a membership for the swimming for your kids, go elsewhere

User

Was not overly pleased with our first swim lesson for my 17 month old. He loves swimming and had two sessions last winter at the shawnessy location. The parented toddler class was in the big pool which was freezing my son did not stop shivering and cried most of the time. At shawnessy it was in the warm kid pool and had songs and was fun. First day here first thing she did was bobs! For a first time swimmer that could be scary!! It was very do this, now do this, and there were kids younger than mine that wouldn’t be able to do a starfish, front glide or back glide the way she wanted. Really hope things change for next week. If we’re in the cold big pool I won’t be happy.

User

Unfortunately my first visit to Shane Homes YMCA was very disappointing. The men's locker room was absolutely disgusting. There is no where to leave outside shoes and all the dirt and mud had been tracked in as far as the showers. A drain was plugged near the showers and the puddle was dirty with Mud and dust. Even the pool deck had signs of dirt and hair from the floor of the locker room. After swimming I felt so dirty standing on the sandy/dirty floor to dry off and get dressed. The showers are private, however the water pressure is almost nothing. Many showers were left running as they are not on automatic shut off valves which seems very wasteful. No drinking water available on the pool deck either. I understand it is only the first week and I will be happy to give a second review of the issues are addressed. Thank you

User

The facility looks fancy and is well lit. The sport courts seemed well used. There is a 200m indoor run in track and lots of spin bikes and fitness equipment. Make sure you have picture id for everyone over 12 years of age! We were almost turned away as our 13 year old does not possess picture id. As we are from out of town and not interested in buying a membership, I found the whole single time user registration painstakingly long. It took 20 minutes to get through the line. Also, beware that their swim hours of operation are misleading. Their web site states the end time as 8h30 pm but they end swimming at 8 pm to give you 30 minutes to change.

For small young families the pool facility would be fun. For myself and four children aged 10 to 17, it was less enjoyable than other wave pools in the city. The wave pool and hot tub are undersized. The lane pool was nice. The lazy river is nice except for the darn splashy things that get you in the face every time you pass :-).

The change rooms worked. They are all white so grime shows easily. Beware to bring your own lock or to rent one before descending the stairs to the locker room. Also they seemed rather convoluted where signage could be improved.

All in all, new pretty building, open, with not much privacy, smaller than expected. I think there are better leisure centres in Calgary (southland) that offer more for less battle and cost.

User

First time - pool was freezing, hot tub was closed, universal change room - was trying to get my things out of my locker while still in my suit and the entire time two male employees chit chatted less than 2 feet from me. Instead of moving away they just stood there the entire time in my personal space. Two men to add to it.

Second time - hot tub water was freezing, wave pool closed off, limited use of smaller pool due to some toddler class and shower rooms for handicapped were all closed off except one.

No tables and chairs to sit down at and have lunch etc. We had to sit on the hard benches

for my special needs client to have his lunch. We were trying to fill the day up being at the Y.

Very much a waste of money and space. Sad you have to come from minus freezing weather outside into a freezing pool/ hot tub.

Oh and I forgot to mention, saw some Asian woman snot in her hand and rinse her boogies into the drain that runs along the side of the pool. I told her it was disgusting!! That with bandaids always floating around in the water. Ugh.😲

User

After reading these reviews, I won't go swimming here. We have been using the drop-in basketball courts for the last two Sundays, and the YMCA needs to make some adjustments to the drop-in schedule. One court needs to be blocked for those that actually want to play a basketball game. The other court needs to be designated as for fun only, for example throwing the ball around into the hoop. It get's crowded and the younger kids can't play than. Also, put signs on the doors as you enter that state you need to have photo id! Instead of walking all the way up to the cashier and then finding out you need it. Also, some clocks in the gym would be nice and I agree with the other comments for the hockey, no where to sit and the benches are uncomfortable. It's a ugly building and we have nicknamed it the rattlesnake due to the outside looking like the skin from a snake.

User

Went with friends and a child and we were all let down by the pool.

Beautiful building but wave pool is so tiny and all lanes were taken up with barely anyone in them. They should have a bigger pool area for families to enjoy.

Lastly hot tub was a Huge let down! It was closed with a line up of people. We eventully got a spot only to have a lifeguard kick everyone out within 10 minutes to let the others waiting in line come in. There was a lot of disappointed people.

Save your money for a membership. It’s no different than any other leisure centre in the city

User

Nice looking facility, but swimming was awful! Kids pool was too cold and our 4 year old couldn’t even stay in longer than 5 mins. The wave pool was a little warmer but packed and way too small. The hot tub had a constant lineup of at least 30 people and they were letting groups in for 10 min intervals.

I honestly haven’t been that cold swimming ever! It was so uncomfortable we left after 30 mins. A solution for the ridiculously long hot tube lineups would be to WARM up the kid and wave pools. Everyone was freezing and willing to wait 10-20 mins in the hot tube lineups as the pools were worse than the wait.

The swimming facilities are too small for the size of the NW community. We won’t be back.

User

I attempted to bring my kids here today and not sure that I am in a rush to come back. I realize this is the first PD day it has been open but I was told by Jason it would be a 25-30 min wait to get in. I begrudgingly got in line anyway and let the kids check out the pool from the windows. They weren't happy with the how small the pool area was and it was so crowded!! When I went to take a peek it made me concerned for their safety. I've been to over crowded swimming pools before on Family Day and never again. The kids actually opted to go to Shouldice instead! That really says something that the lazy river, waterslide and wavepool couldn't beat a standard lane pool that doesn't even have a hot tub like Shouldice. After 10 minutes of waiting and hardly moving up in line myself and another customer behind me were googling other public swim times at different pools and we left. The amount of front desk staff taking drop in was far from adequate. A PD day should have been anticipated, both the public and separate schools are off today. Based on some of the other reviews I see here it sounds like this isn't the only time this has happened. Not a good first impression.

Thank you

Ugh.😲

This is Mat. He is very lonely. Why don't you come visit Mat for a STRETCH AND RELAX Class every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 1:30pm at the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge. He will help you through a YIN YOGA class. You will both feel better after!

Beautiful looking facility. The line up wasn’t that long but we wait was agonizing long time for drop in swimming. When we got to the front and found out the wave pool wasn’t open!! Our reason for coming - i looked up on line before coming and there was no mention of it being closed.

Wish they would of spent more money on the inside and made bigger hot tubs and pools instead of what they spent on the design of the building.

Went there with the kids and hubby to go swimming. It's new so the 15 minute wait to pay is understandable. Went to the family change room and because there's no where to put your boots the floors are dirty.

The kiddie pool is FREEZING, the wave pool was slightly above freezing. My toddler and 4 year old were shivering and kept asking to go to the hot tub. We must not have been the only ones to think that because everyone was trying to pack into the hot tub (which really wasn't very hot).

Overall, beautiful but too cold to enjoy swimming here will go somewhere else.

Thank you

Ugh.😲
