About Sharon Storton, Registered Psychologist

Sharon Storton is a licensed Phsycologist located in Calgary, Ab.

Specializing in support for the perinatal and early parenting periods.

Sharon Storton, Registered Psychologist Description

Sharon is a Registered Psychologist with over two decades of experience in the healing arts.

Sharon earned her Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology, with a Health Psychology emphasis, and subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Applied Psychology, Social Work, and Women’s Studies) with an emphasis on Women’s Mental Health. Sharon’s undergraduate Bachelor of Science centred on the physical aspects of birth and breastfeeding. Sharon has developed a dual specialty: perinatal mental health (pre-conception, pregnancy, birth, and postnatal), and supporting individuals and their families healing from traumatic stress (which can include extremely challenging events, as well as grief). The overlaps in these two fields are surprisingly significant.

In 2007, Sharon founded SOLACE (“support in overcoming labour and childbearing experiences”) for Mothers (www. solaceformothers.org). Collaborating with other gifted and energetic women, the organization quickly expanded to include moderated online peer support for women from more than 40 countries worldwide. This Internet-based forum is still very active today. Sharon continued this work in a participatory and advisory capacity with Penny Simkin’s organization, PATTCh (Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth), and with Calgary’s CARE doula program for women in high-risk circumstances.

Sharon is an active speaker, writer, and advocate on topics surrounding women and family wellness.

Men are often expected to be a participant in the birth of their children by being educated, supportive, advocates for their childbearing partners. So much attention is paid to the baby and the mothers in the early weeks after the event, that by the time friends and family get around to noticing how the father is doing, the conversation has moved on. The fact of the matter is, though, that fathers are at just as great a risk as mothers for depression, anxiety, or trauma follo...wing childbirth, and often harbour thoughts about voluntary infertility going forward. Based upon the International Caesarean Awareness Network model of supportive story telling, we are offering fathers a chance to debrief, understand the likely chain of events during their family’s childbearing experience, and think about communicating their wants and wishes going forward from here.
