In December of 2012 I accidentally tripped and fell head first into a bucket of paint. ( can you imagine, what luck) Oddly, I enjoyed this misfortune so much I decided to stay submerged for a while and swim around. Well, wouldn't ya know it I've been happily swimming around ever since. ( well, often times doggy paddling and gasping for air)

The truth is I did in fact accidentally discover this wonderful new world of painting. I was browsing a local dollar store and came upon the craft section, grabbing a few small canvases and a handful of paint I thought this could be fun. ( I've never painted ) I was immediately hooked and can vividly remember the first few pieces I completed and the amazing euphoric feeling that accompanied the whole process. Then everything changed, absolutely everything in my life changed, in a hurry.

My background for the past 2 decades had been working in hotels, back and forth from the East coast of Canada to the West Coast. I was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia but have been living in Banff, Alberta off and on for quite some time. (Both pretty dandy places if you ask me)There was also an interesting period of my life living in the United Kingdom. ( that's an interesting story for another time )

I'd like to say that my hospitality career was truly fulfilling and magical but the truth is, I was over it and I desperately needed to “check out”. So I made the decision to give up on the only career I had. I felt like it was time to do something that I could enjoy on a daily basis, and feel good about it. Maybe just take some time off and figure out where to go from here. But I knew full well what I wanted to do and yes, I wanted to paint.

Fully obsessed I painted everyday, for months and months. I was fortunate to be asked to be part of a friends art show, and the support and interest was overwhelming. I went on to do several more solo shows in town, it was such a amazing experience, something I'd never experienced. I was starting to believe that my hobby had turned into a lot more and I was keen on taking things more serious. So that I did.

I guess I should fast forward a bit, either that or write a book. It's been nearly 3 years since things have changed. I've had some ups and downs, painted lots and painted little. Made some great contacts locally and via social media and worked hard on marketing Shawnyboypaint. It's been a thrilling rollercoaster ride thus far, and I've never questioned if this is what I should be doing, not a chance. I haven't stopped thinking, talking and breathing art, not for a minute. ( ask anyone) It's the one constant that brings balance and serenity into my life and I will never stop creating.
