Ski2Lrt Description

Edmontonians are very lucky for many reasons. One big reason: we have a lot of green space. For many months each year, however, the green belts that surround our neighbourhoods and run along our utility corridors are covered in snow. Snow causes many residents to retreat to their homes and cars and ignore the green belts until spring. Yet, come winter, many of these green belts are embraced as white belts and are tracked out by enthusiastic skiers.

We are also lucky to have Light Rail Transit (LRT) service, but many of our residents can only access it by driving or by standing in the cold waiting for a bus. The Century Park station sits at the end of the longest stretch of track on the the LRT line.

Our pilot project aims to offer residents an alternative to accessing the station in the winter. It will provide skiers, who want to take advantage of the white belts, a secure place to lock up their skis. Track setters can set the example. Edmontonians can be greener, healthier commuters even in the winter. We have the foundation it takes; we simply need to get moving.
