About Social Sciences - Ambrose University

Social Sciences at Ambrose University includes Behavioural Science & Psychology, and equips students for graduate school & work in the social sector.

Social Sciences - Ambrose University Description

Behavioural Science—BHS for short—is an interdisciplinary program of sociology and psychology. Through psychology you’ll examine how individuals perceive, develop within, and act upon the world. Through sociology you’ll examine how groups and cultures create their own social worlds and how those worlds affect the people who are a part of them. You’ll learn how sociology and psychology intersect in human behaviour, and your learning in one will complement the other. You’ll not only take fascinating classes and do interesting research, you’ll also put your learning to work by doing a community practicum.

What have your faculty been up to this summer? Dr. Alan Ho has been preparing for fall courses and writing a research article about some of the internal struggles that Frederick Chopin, the great 19-century Romantic pianist, was facing in his life. He also took a trip to the Far East: visiting family members and friends in Hong Kong and Zhaoqing City, China & sight-seeing in Kyoto and Osaka in Japan. (Photo is of Alan at Kinkaku-ji, a very popular Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto.)

Calgary Alpha House Society has been a key practicum partner for BHS students over the years, and they've hired a number of our students as well. Alyshia is one such student who went from practicum to employment with Alpha House. Here's what she had this to say about her experience. #thisisBHS #thisisAmbrose

Interesting research on students who complete double-majors and their career success. Would you consider a double major with your BHS degree? Talk with your academic advisor to learn more! "What we found in our newly-published study is that students who double majored scored 17.4 percentile points higher on our overall innovation measure than the average student. The innovation advantage for double majors is almost three times higher than any other major, including business, engineering and math/statistics." http://ow.ly/Bf5L50hsONl

What did your BHS degree mean to you? Here's what Dan, class of 2014, had to say about BHS impacting his career: "I have found that a lot of the different principles which were taught within the BHS program have been very applicable … My current position has been heavily influenced by the teaching style of Joel Thiessen in that I am trying to create an open and engaging dialogue within the classroom as I am teaching about the principles of Financial Literacy, Work Readiness, and Entrepreneurship. I was very fortunate to have had such an interactive educational experience with all of my professors." #thisisAmbrose #thisisBHS

What are your faculty doing this summer? Dr. Monetta Bailey had this to say: "I plan on spending the majority of this summer finalizing a couple articles for publication. While this doesn’t sound very exciting, at least I get to do it on my patio. I am also in the early stages of some new research that is very important to me so this summer I will be working to get that going. And of course you can still see me once a month on Alberta Primetime’s crime panel on CTVTwo discus...sing current issues in criminal justice.
And for fun... well when I can’t make it back to Barbados during the summer months I like to bring the Caribbean here. I serve as the president of the Barbados Canadian Association of Calgary and summer is always a busy time for the Caribbean associations here in Calgary. The highlight is our Caribbean festival, Carifest which is held late in August. Last year Mayor Naheed Nenshi stopped by our display for a photo opp. Who knows who we’ll see this year!"
