WHY AM I SO BLUE? - on Seasonal Depression January is the month when depression can really set in for many people. The winter feels long, bills from overspending during the holidays come due, not getting outdoors enough, along with being less active - all of these contribute to the winter blues.
IS IT SERIOUS? Yes, it is. During the first two months of the year we can feel the most depressed. This makes us want to become couch potatoes and do nothing. It makes us look at our... relationships, lives and jobs in a more negative light. We find ourselves avoiding action, being more frustrated and in greater conflict with those closest to us.
STOPPING NEGATIVE THINKING & EMOTIONS is key to good mental health. We need to know how to get through the winter months and maintain positive psychology.
DO THIS: 1. For one day, keep a note pad and write down any negative thoughts that come to mind. Also, note any mood shifts that move into negative territory. 2. The next day, review your list and ask yourself how true your negative thoughts and emotions really are. Look at the facts and start challenging anything that is not entirely true.
NOTE: In season depression we will see way too many aspects of life through a dark lens that rob us of seeing the good. Learning how to shift our thinking and emotions back to a positive place will greatly increase our moods, energy levels, as well as enhance our relationships.
