How are your swim survival skills?
July 15 to 21 is National Drowning Prevention Week, an opportunity to focus on the importance of water safety and drowning prevention all year long. It may seem like common sense to be safe around water; unfortunately, Canada’s statistics say otherwise. About 500 Canadians drown every year, usually in a preventable situation, and alcohol is related in about 40 per cent of drownings. It is the second leading cause of preventable death for c...hildren under 10 years old. These statistics don’t seem to be changing, even as public awareness of drowning increases. This is why The City and Calgary Recreation are committed to providing swimming skills to all Calgarians of all ages.
“Swimming lessons provide a necessary life skill,” says Natasha Newberry, senior attendant with Calgary Recreation. The City provides swim lessons for all ages, from Swim for Life to Junior Lifesaving Club, and opportunities to practice those skills through drop-in public swim.
Many of the people who drown never intended to go in the water. If you’re a non-swimmer and you got knocked off a dock while watching an event, would you survive? Especially if you were disoriented, upside down, cold and panicking? “It’s never too late to learn to swim,” says Natasha. “If you can take lessons and practice your skills, your chance of surviving an unintended fall into the water is higher. ” In recognition of our commitment to swimming lessons and water safety, Calgary Recreation was recently honoured with a series of awards from the Lifesaving Society Alberta & Northwest Territories, including:
The Lifesaving Society is a national organization working to prevent drowning and reduce water-related injury through “Water Smart” public education, research and aquatic safety standards. Calgary Recreation works closely with the Lifesaving Society to deliver programs at City Aquatic and Fitness Centres and Leisure Centre Pools.

Both Joe Kryczka end Ed Whalen arenas at Both the Southland Leisure Centre Arenas have been closed until further notice. This closure is due to an unplanned mechanical failure affecting the ice surface cooling systems.

Thank you for your forward thinking Southland Leisure Centre. Thank you for realizing how important it is for us to realize that nudity is NOT the problem, it never has been. The issue is the fear based mentality that says "nudity = bad". What's bad, is that we are taught at a younger age to be ashamed of our bodies instead of practicing to love ourselves, just as we are. What's bad, is how a safe and secure event that has been happening in Calgary for several years, with absolutely no issues, was stopped by ppl who live in fear.

User

So happy Southland Leisure Centre is hosting a private family oriented nude swim! Thankful that in this over-privileged society there are still some truly safe places to bring your family and be in our most natural state with our children and a great way to teach them humility, acceptance and security! THANK YOU!

My kiddos and I attended the Dive in Movie last night. It was great! We had such a blast. What a fun idea. We will certainly come again

User

My boys and I had a great time rock climbing. The instructors were friendly and knowledgeable.

User

I feel your business is taking alot of flak from haters over the nudist event. Unfairly assuming the worst of it. Here is a 5 star rating to help even the fairness.

User

I am impressed that Southland Leisure Centre would host a private nude swim. I am disappointed that so many fearful people projected assumptions and angst and that the pressure was too much for the swim to go ahead. Maybe these people can't comprehend what it might be to be healthy minded and well-boundaried, *even* when nude. I wish them all the best. I see that many of those people have visited here to give negative reviews, with some unkind and uninformed statements, and I wish they had simply and silently chosen to swim elsewhere. I for one will consider going SLC more often.

User

First of all I would like to thank Southland Leisure Centre for all the friendly service, good times and variety of programs. You guys are fantastic.

I feel it's important to address all of the bad press that you have received during this unsettling time. All you did was welcome a community into your facility and all of a sudden a huge uproar has created a ton of animosity. I will say this... EVERYONE has the right to voice their concerns and opinions; it's what being a true Canadian is all about. However when people choose to flex their opinions using threats of violence, vandalism and acts of hate, this is domestic terrorism and needs to be dealt with. All of these comments should be reported to the Calgary Police and penalized as such. No matter what side of the coin you are on, this cannot continue. Please look out for each other and stay safe, thank you.

Do what you want.

I’ve been going here since I was a kid

I earned swimming badges there learning to swim. The big red slide was all we talked about as a kid. If you don’t like an event don’t go.

Dear Parents: Southland Leisure Centre is not your babysitter! So when you drop off your "darling" kids make sure they understand what it means to respect other's premises and those around them. And when an adult onlooker says to "stop it" maybe they do so! Thanks Southland for reacting so quickly to the 3 "darling" children Tuesday Feb 23rd. Signed a Mom of a 11 and 12 year old boy who if they ever acted that way would not be returning for a very, very long time.

I loved the water and the waves. I didn't like the food. Hamburger looked uncooked and the fries tasted like wood. I loved the hot tub and the steam room. Showers were clean but, it was the second time I couldn't get into my locker without having to call staff to get master key to free my clothes. Overall it was very enjoyable and loud.

User

Pool is ok. Parking lot is terrible! Almost got hit in the back lot because people think there are more spots then there really are!

User

It's a good facility and family friendly. The pool and slides are nice. My only issue is that the gym floor for basketball/badminton and other sports is so dirty all the time it seems like it never gets cleaned. It's almost to the point where people slip and nearly get hurt.

User

I love the Southland Leisure Centre... I am horrified to hear a Family Friendly PUBLIC pool would allow A NUDE swim. What lines are getting blurred with protecting our kids?

What message does this send? I was under the belief this Event was cancelled yet now I hear it wasn't!!

Boycott as a Family Centre... this isn't ok Southland. Why was the Public told this Event was cancelled? Not ok!

Protect our kids innocence!!!

We went there tonight, it was filthy everywhere, the change rooms were both gross, there was dirty diapers and stuff everywhere, we were there for 3 hours swimming and the change rooms had not been cleaned in that time and they were gross when we came in! The pool area was ok, still not great! There was garbage right by hot tub, several staff walked by and didn't pick it up. Won't be going back. Dirtiest pool in the city and worst o have ever experienced!

My children usually take swimming lessons at the Trico, but since it's currently being renovated, we decided to come to you. On the first day, the lady at the front desk looked at my receipt, told us the code to the family room, and told us we could just walk in each time. On our 6th class, the lady at the front desk made a huge fuss because we attempted to walk in. Got mad at me because I didn't have my receipt, and in all honesty, was just rude. It's not my fault that different staff tell customers different things. Second issue. The change rooms. Gross. Just gross. They smell bad. The showers in the family change room block the entrance to the pool (so if someone is showering you either have to wait, or walk through and get wet), and they just overall need a Reno. Third. There is a rule that the kids can't go in the kiddie pool if they are there for lessons. Look, I would fully understand that rule if there were actual paying customers there, and the lesson kids were taking up all the room. But there aren't any. And I take my 3 kids for lessons, which all start 15 min apart. Which means for 15 min my kids (and every other child here) has to shiver and wait for their lesson. So every single lesson, you see 10-15 kids get kicked out of the kiddie pool, when the poor things are freezing! Please don't suggest that I wait in the stinky change room and miss my kids lessons, that just isn't acceptable to me. You guys have a lot of improvements to make, and it would be lovely if you took these comments seriously.

People need to learn how to handle an opinion, I won’t ever go here again and grown ups just need to respect that, just like if you want to go there I don’t care it’s your opinion do what you want, people on here have attacked me a few times but I’m a better man than that, I have children and need to set an example not to attack people because of a difference of opinion

User

My daughter nearly slashed open her jugular on one of the stupid water squirting poles in the kid area. There is an island with a big mushroom and a few poles that squirt water. When the waves come on they knock little kids legs out from under them and those poles have a razor sharp steel circle cut out in the top. If they happen to be standing over them when that happens go start the car because your going to the hospital. She received several stitches to her face and throat. Keep your kids away from that island or just find another pool,

User

Just a heads up my family got food poisoning from your cafeteria tonight we had chicken wings and the vegetables with dip both my kids and I ate carrots with dip my son puked right after we ate around 830 pm I had to drive home while puking in a cup loved every minute of it the my other son puked all night best check your supply before more get sick

User

I have two preschoolers taking swimming lessons here and am really tired of all the nonsence they put you threw. You are not allowed entry to change children until 15 minutes before the class. Try getting two small kids in stripped of winter clothes and changed for lessons in that time. Completely ridiculous and unnecessary.

Of all the pools we have (and will be returning to) for lessons none have made an issue of my 3 year old warming up in the baby pool before getting changed except here. Very disappoint and will not be taking further lessons here.

Love it
