St. Aldhelm (640 – 709 AD)
He is known to us as a sensitive priest and bishop. He is remembered as a skilful architect of churches and monasteries, as a prominent reformer, an evangelist, a skilful orator – colourful in speech and manner, a scholar. Historians describe him as beyond comparison, the most learned and ingenious western scholar of the late seventh century. In 675, he became Abbot of Malmsebury and in 705 he was made Bishop Sherborne. He died May 25, 709, which is now honoured as his feast day.
