University of Calgary students, faculty and staff coming back this fall notice that the main campus looks a lot different than it did at the end of the spring semester as we make progress on one of the largest construction projects in recent campus history. The redevelopment of MacKimmie Tower has progressed as our crews finished removing the tower’s exterior precast concrete panels from top to bottom. The building was stripped to its bare bones in preparation for the install...ation of two additional floors and the inner glass façade, which is currently underway. Now that MacKimmie Tower has been stripped of its exterior precast concrete panels, crews have begun installing the inner glass skin of the building’s double-skin façade. Work has also begun on the addition of two floors in the removal of the building’s existing roof. More on construction progress here: https://bit.ly/2OCp2Xe. #stuartolsoncreates

Congratulations to Lethbridge College as it celebrates the one year anniversary of the grand opening of its Trades & Technologies Facility. Completed in 2017, the expanded trades and technologies centre adds 170,000 square-feet of program space to the college, and supports more than 880 new learners. This stunning facility has since received top honours at the Prairie Wood Design Awards, recognizing the extensive use of wood as a design element to support the college’s focus on sustainability. #stuartolsoncreates

Construction on ATB Centre Phase 2 in Lethbridge, Alberta continues to progress! Interior work has been going at a feverish pace with the drywall now up, giving shape to many of the spaces. The concrete floors are being polished in the main lobby and the aquatics centre is getting closer and closer to holding water every day. At approximately 256,000 square feet, construction of Phase 2 includes 258 concrete piles in the ground supporting the building, 200 screw piles in the ground supporting the pools, and over 140,000 concrete block units. We are THRILLED to announce that our Third Annual Children's Charity Classic held yesterday raised over $50,000 for the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation! We were fortunate to present the cheque to Dr. Catherine Lebel, one of the 288 bright minds of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute who are working hard to find new ways of diagnosing and treating a wide range of pediatric disorders. Dr. Lebel's work with the Child and Adolescent Imaging Research Program and Developmental Neuroimaging Lab uses MRI to study brain structure and function in children in hopes of helping children with learning and behavioural challenges. Thank you to all of our golfers, sponsors, trade partners and supporters for your generous contributions to this event and for helping us make a positive impact in our community. #stuartolsoncreates

There are more than 60 events and 12 installations to choose from, including our own Treeter Totter designed in collaboration with DIALOG. Our VP of Innovation Clint Undseth recently spoke at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario annual conference discussing Smart Strategies for Smart Cities. He focused on collaboration and citizens, especially on lessons learned on smart city initiatives centering on collaboration between civilians, private sector, academia/polytechnics and government. He noted quoted studies showing that whenever there has been success in smart city initiatives, it has been due to a peo...ple first strategy. 100+ conference goers listened in as Clint took them through examples from abroad in Amsterdam and China, back to Canada and our own backyard, expounding on successes and lessons learned and what smart strategy entails. Clint co-chairs Canada’s Zero Waste Council for Construction, Recycling and Demolition. Our industry represents 30% of landfill and 20% of embedded carbon so using recycled materials with product quality specifications and procurement are two vital aspects to smart strategy. Conversation around smart cities continues and Stuart Olson is happy be part of that discussion, collaborating with the municipalities and citizens living in the buildings we construct. #stuartolsoncreates
