Marty doing a single arm landmine push press which is great for developing upper body power (or strength) for those who do not have great overhead pressing mobility. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, barbell inline with the front of the shoulder. Dip down with the legs and hips, push the feet into the ground for leverage. Drive the lower and upper body to the top position. Important that the bar is moving fast throughout the exercise. You should here a snap at the top from the landmine and barbell.

Here Leanne performs chest-supported rows with the cables, a great variation of the traditional dumbbell chest-supported row. The cable allows various different angles to be used for the rows, as well as allowing a big reach forward at the beginning of each rep (greater reach = better range of motion on the exercise = greater benefit). These rows give a fantastic squeeze in the lat muscles and can be a great alternative if someone struggles to feel their lats in other row variations.

Ethan’s niece (Leighton) was put to test when she had her shot at this obstacle course. Crawling, climbing, swinging, throwing, jumping, pushing, and dragging – combined with some light motivational coaching from Ethan and they conquered this like little all-stars. It’s never too early to work on movement skills! In fact, many adults can benefit from doing this kind of training!

Once you’re strong enough to rep out normal (and perfect) push-ups from the floor, you can add a progression and create challenge. Trish has been able to perform ring push-ups with a 35lb vest on for multiple reps and sets for some time. Now, there are many ways to progress her from here but for those advanced lifters, enter the band assisted one arm push-up. The problems with normal one arm push-ups is that most aren’t strong enough to perform them correctly, and number two is resisting body rotation. By using the band, Trish keeps her body in a plank, avoids rotation, and as you can see, they don’t deviate from her normal 2 arm push-up by her keeping her “arrow” arm stance and not a “T”. Keep your arm/hand holding the band tucked tight towards your body, grip the floor hard with your working hand, and crank up your body tension.

Here Jeff performs a 1-arm landmine press while holding a split squat position (note that his back knee is not resting on the ground). This is a great exercise for Jeff’s particular needs, as it trains his upper body strength while also working on foot and ankle stability, a quality he needs to help him manage a chronic knee injury. There are always ways to keep training around pain or injuries, the key is just to find the right exercise variations to fit each individual person..

Single leg or unilateral work is really important to strength and stability independently between legs. Fran loves her single leg squats. The goal here is to keep the torso from dropping as you sink straight down, tapping the bench and then pushing back up. You don’t want to sit down because you’ll lose the tension and it will be very difficult to get back up properly.

I get it, a good sweaty training session feels awesome. There is something about sweat dripping off you that makes you feel like you accomplished, or that you worked hard. But sweating shouldn’t be the GOAL of the workout. The goal of your workout should be to progress, to move better, to crush goals, OR if need be that day, maintenance work. Social media can have you believing that if you didn’t sweat, you didn’t work hard enough or didn’t have a good workout. ALL movement, ALL workouts, ALL exercise (except burpees) will benefit you physically AND mentally, regardless if you sweat or not.

SVPT is proud to present #MYFIT - a celebration of our clients who live a fit and balanced lifestyle. ** #MYFIT is not about a 6 pack or a bikini body, it's about showing that fitness comes in ALL SHAPES AND SIZES, and truly is training to live a more full life and HEALTH. It’s not about young and skinny, it’s about showing that fitness can be a part of ANYONE’S life, regardless of age. ** #MYFIT celebrates clients who challenge themselves physically and mentally to move bett...er, perform better and live better. #thesvptway ** We are grateful for Vikram sharing his #MYFIT story:
“Prior to joining SVPT in September 2016, I had dabbled a bit in fitness – paid for memberships at (or I should say “donated money to”) gyms only to use them a few times a year, spent too much time on cardio machines, and played sports recreationally. Then of course, life happens - everyone has a story, and it was not until I had my ‘wake-up call’ in 2015 (a spontaneous artery tear in my heart that put me within 2 millimeters of not being on this earth) that did I start to analyze multiple faucets of my life and one of my goals was to level up my personal fitness.
Since I started at SVPT, I have noticed positive changes. I used to suffer from constant upper back pain which has since diminished, I feel stronger in everyday life and when playing recreational sports, stress levels are down, my doctor tells me all blood work chemistry has been trending in the right direction, I sleep better, am more present, happier, and I’ve even lost a few pounds!
#MYFIT to me is - • A community. SVPT has been awesome. I enjoy the social aspect (thanks to all the trainers and fellow clients for the conversations!) as well as getting that heart rate up. • A journey. I now look at the fitness goals I wrote when I started at SVPT and chuckle as they were very ambitious and not real. There may be challenges or injuries along the way but as long as we keep on taking that next step, all will be fine. • Playing the long game. My trainer Shawn’s message has always been – consistency is key, which has really resonated with me. Although short term goals are important, I’m hoping for long term sustainability and continued mobility in my later years. • A balance between physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. • A blessing. I used to take any type of movement for granted until I spent some time in a hospital bed. I think of that every time I need to push through a challenging exercise or a late night hockey game as there are many people in this world that do not have that blessing of movement. “

Thank you Shara for all the excellent training and advice over the years! So grateful to have the opportunity to train with such a knowledgeable and qualified coach!

I decided my mid-30's seemed to be a good time to join the military, but the prospect of basic training with men 15 years younger than me was daunting. Not only did Ethan design a training program that increased my endurance and load bearing capacity, but he helped me through injuries by modifying strength exercises to compliment my physio. Thanks to him I was able to easily keep pace with the boys and came out stronger than ever! Sorry for cursing at you half way through every workout Ethan, your good humour was also greatly appreciated :)

For me, finding motivation to start my fitness journey was the hardest part. I wanted to lose weight, but also to become stronger and improve my overall health. When you join SVPT, you aren't just getting a workout. Your personal trainer educates you, and customizes a plan that works for your body. My trainer is encouraging, and gives me confidence when I need it. I've only been with SVPT for two months, but I'm already loving the changes I see in my body, and the extra energy I have! Making the phone call to SVPT was the first step, and now I look forward to going once a week!
