This week's installation of Flora Fridays highlights Xerophyllum tenax or common beargrass. It is found in western North America and specifically within Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. It occurs in mountainous habitat containing open woods, dry slopes, and ridges. It is a member of the lily family that typically flowers the year after a fire or every 5-7 years. Native Americans used the leaves to weave baskets and ate the roasted roots. Mountain goats eat the leaves in the winter, but it is generally unpalatable to other wildlife. This week's Wildlife Wednesday photo was taken by our junior wildlife biologist, Brad Yee. Brad took this photo while observing Osprey nesting behaviour near power lines as part of a post construction monitoring project in southern Alberta.

It is found in Western North America and specifically within British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in Canada. Preferred habitat is dry grasslands, badlands, and eroded area. Many wildlife species, including pronghorn and deer, eat the fruits and pads, but cattle generally avoid them due to the spines. An interesting fact is that glochids (tiny bristle-like barbed hairs) on the stems can cause dermatitis (severe skin irritation) in humans upon contact.
