This week's installation of Flora Fridays highlights Xerophyllum tenax or common beargrass. It is found in western North America and specifically within Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. It occurs in mountainous habitat containing open woods, dry slopes, and ridges. It is a member of the lily family that typically flowers the year after a fire or every 5-7 years. Native Americans used the leaves to weave baskets and ate the roasted roots. Mountain goats eat the leaves in the winter, but it is generally unpalatable to other wildlife. This is some very neat footage of bats leaving their roost.

This week's Wildlife Wednesday photo was taken by our junior wildlife biologist, Brad Yee. Brad took this photo while observing Osprey nesting behaviour near power lines as part of a post construction monitoring project in southern Alberta.

Welcome to TCS's first installment of Flora Fridays where we will show plant photos taken from our projects and by our biologists. The first picture is of Opuntia polyacantha or Plains Prickly Pear. It is found in Western North America and specifically within British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in Canada. Preferred habitat is dry grasslands, badlands, and eroded area. Many wildlife species, including pronghorn and deer, eat the fruits and pads, but cattle generally avoid them due to the spines. An interesting fact is that glochids (tiny bristle-like barbed hairs) on the stems can cause dermatitis (severe skin irritation) in humans upon contact. Welcome to TCS's first installment of Wildlife Wednesdays where we will show wildlife photos (or wildlife related photos) taken from our projects and by our biologists. The first picture is of some recent tracks found in the constant snow that we have been getting since Christmas. While the species is not uncommon, these tracks are not commonly found during winter tracking projects. Any guesses on what it is?
