The Bownesian Grocer

Love this neighbourhood grocery store! They have a fantastic selection of high quality niche food items and lots of great value sale items. I particularly love the fact that they also stock lots of portion sizes in their meat section which is incredibly convenient for single people with limited freezer space!

Convenient community store. Good for what you need on the go. Selection is sufficient but you might not always find what you need.

The Bownesian Grocer is a great little grocery store in the heart of Bowness. It provides the everyday essentials and also has a wonderful hot and cold food selection for on-the-go lunches or dinners.
Prices are a bit higher on some items than the "big box" grocery stores, but I think it's a small price to pay to keep things local.

Let me start by saying I don't live in the area, I live up in signal hill, and have a lot of options for grocery shops, both large chain and smaller-ish shops such as blush market. I drive past this sometimes and always thought it looked cute, and today I decided to stop in, as I was on my way home and needed to grab some items and it didn't seem too busy, and I am happy I did. It's a very cute, small, locally owned shop and they have a great selection of produce and grocery goods. The bakery looked great, and the deli items looked like they were good, the only place that appeared to be slightly lacking was the butcher and meat department which was really sad, I think every amazing grocer needs an amazing butcher! The pricing is a little bit high, but shops tend to be a little more than the big guys, cuz obviously buying power isn't as good to someone who has 1 store to a chain that has 100s. The only reason it didn't get a full 5 start rating was because I was SO hopeful they'd have a little more hard to find items, as I find that's really what separates small shops from the big players.

I've been in the neighbourhood for 10 months now and I believe in supporting local business even though my income is very modest. I was willing to pay extra in a locally-run, non-chain grocery store.

But I was robbed! $2.70 for ONE avocado. (and I needed 2!) Because it's organic. And the Bownesian Grocer doesn't offer 'normal' avocado's even though they aren't on the 'dangerous' list for non-organic foods. Their ONLY choice is organic avocados.

That kind of ripped the bandaid off for me. The Bownesian isn't a 'local grocer.' It's an 'artisanal replica' of a grocery store you'd expect in a neighbourhood where character-killing gentrification is taking place.

I'm going back to Safeway where the real people shop. Apologies to the nice staff... those policies aren't your fault.

Although they do sell the most awesome local eggs that are very reasonably priced. Such a tease.

Always wonderful. An excellent selection of organic foods, friendly staff and service.

Employees are courteous, friendly and, always willing to help a shopper find what they want. From cashier to deli to stock people , their all good people
