Did you know that the Vancouver Island marmot is Canada's most endangered mammal? 🍁
In 2003, their wild population had dwindled to less than 30 individuals. Thanks in part to our captive-release program, these rodents number approximately 200 in the wild!

For reptiles, like our leopard tortoise, Sheldon, cooler weather means spending more time indoors.
During the summer he got his daily walks out in the sunshine, but now you'll be more likely to see him inside. Come visit the big guy up close in the TransAlta Rainforest! 🐢

🦓 Zebras of the Mountains 🌄
The highlands of Angola & Namibia are home to the Hartmann's mountain zebra, which is threatened by over-hunting & conflicts with livestock.
Unlike most zebra species, which prefer flat open plains, mountain zebra are skilled mountaineers, and have been found has high as 2000 meters above sea level - that's double the elevation of Calgary!
... Our zebra are a part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) that maintains a healthy captive population of this Vulnerable species.

Happy National Wildlife Day!
Today was founded, not only to bring awareness to threatened wildlife, but also to acknowledge the great conservation work zoos do across the globe!
For us, that means celebrating our many conservation programs, including the reintroduction of iconic Albertan whooping cranes, our research into black-tailed prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets in Saskatchewan, and our support for projects like the Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary - WCHS and the M...adagascar Biodiversity Partnership!
Not only that, but many of the animals you visit at the zoo are a part of Species Survival Plans (SSP), which maintain healthy populations of threatened species in captivity, ensuring their future survival.
And thank YOU for supporting wildlife conservation, both here in Canada, and around the world! 🌍

🌲 Bison of the Boreal Forest 🌲
Although we usually think of bison as prairie animals, the northern subspecies, called the wood bison, live in boreal forest habitat. Wood bison are the largest land mammals in North America, with some bulls exceeding 900 kilograms!
Once reduced to just a single herd of 200 in Alberta, they now number 10,000 in about 20 herds. However, conservation efforts are still required to keep these giants alive and well into the future.
... You can help save bison in the wild by choosing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper products, which are produced using recycled and sustainably sourced paper. ♻️

On the ball! 🐫⚽
This giant wiffle ball is a perfect form of feeding enrichment for large herbivores. Our Bactrian camels use their noses to roll the ball around, gathering the treats that fall out of the holes. This keeps foraging for food interesting!

A flock of 4 African pygmy geese have landed in our Rainforest Aviary!
These birds are the smallest waterfowl in Africa, and at 285 grams, they are 13 times smaller than a Canada goose! They're called geese thanks to their pointed, goose-like bill, even though they are more closely related to ducks. 🦆
Our pygmy geese are a part of a Species Survival Plan (SSP), which ensures the genetic health of the captive population of these adorable birds.

This long weekend, bring your friends & family to meet our giant pandas - including twins, Jia Panpan & Jia Yueyue! 🐼🐼
These 2 are nearing adult age, but still have lots of their childish energy left! Enjoy their antics at our beautiful Panda Passage.

We went on a very hot day. We started in the morning when it was cooler thankfully. We loved the panda exhibit, and the tiger was growling, so amazing. The one giraffe was so very close it was awesome! Even the lemurs came out, so cute! The lions were sleeping, but they do that! The bears in the Canadian wild were eating and being awesome to watch! The penguins were beautiful! Thank you for having this attraction! We are on a family holiday, and hadn’t been since 2005.

User

We are here from Otte kids.awa and loved the zoo.we have been to the Tronto zoo many times and feel it is way too much walking up and down hills. We would never do it in a day. I think my favorite part of the zoo were the penguin. I loved the way it was set up for the kids. I loved to see the panda bears.Your staff were wonderful. Hope to come back one day with our grandchildren.

The Zoo is such a special place here in Calgary. Their team really look after the animals, but they also do so much for conservation and the environment. This is an awesome place to go with or without children, at least once a year!

User

The Calgary Zoo is so beautiful, to walk around and see all the nice flowers and visit the pandas and many other four-legged creatures.

User

Since we first moved to Calgary the zoo has been our place to get away from the city. As our children were growing up they spent many hours at the zoo playing and learning. One of the best, if not the best, zoos you will ever have the good fortune of visiting.

User

Our Calgary Zoo is a world class facility, the animals are well tended and the keepers knowledgeable and friendly. We went to the Panda Breakfast and I highly recommend it! We were able to visit the panda enclosure as a small group before the zoo even opened and it was a treat! The buffet breakfast was delicious, but the best part was being at the zoo without the crowds. I’ll probably go again sometime in the next five years :)

User

Honestly the best zoo I have ever been to. Bought season passes for the family and years too come.

User

Great experience from start to finish. We started with the Pandas and they didn’t disappoint! Adorable and they came from Toronto where we missed them( we live in Wasaga Beach),but were lucky enough to see them in our visit to Calgary.

The other animals were great too and the variety was great.

I’d highly recommend Calgary Zoo!

User

Clean area and friendly staff who care about the animals. I make it a point to visit the Calgary Zoo every time I visit Calgary.

User

Calgary Zoo was a place my son coveted, MY son loves the place and I am so happy that the zoo has an engage membership, he interacts and ask the animal keepers and watch the hippo teeth being brushed and even feeding other animals. He learn new stuffs every time he visits. Thank you Calgary zoo!

User

overall it was very nice Zoo seems smaller there is no nocturnal animals. very pricey for the 2 of us admission $62 pulse food and drinks made it a $100 day. Probably only be able to afford it once a year

All staff are very nice

User

Took my grandaughter and loved the park. The staff were friendly and helpful. Found it expenive though at 65 dollars for the 2 of us, plus 10 dollars parking and then any snacks, refreshments and souveniers were all top prices too. $4 for an ice cream $3 for a drink. I get that we are helping support the conservation of these animals but, I'd come back more often if i didnt have to shell out so much to help in each visit. As it is, I'm glad i was able to go, but probably wont be back due to the cost.

User

the zoo was awesome but they should really place water fountains around the zoo . i seem to have only found 1

User

Panda and penguins section was good. Rest it was not planned properly. You have to go back the same way you have came in. It should be in circle. So that if you start from one side you are meeting at the same point.

User

I found the conservatory totally captivating, like being in another world. The butterfly garden was enchanting (except for the children trying to touch the butterflies). The horticultural gardens were lovely, and beautifully cared for. As a zoo is basically a stationary ark, preserving species in danger of extinction, I understand how difficult it must be to do this and somehow make it profitable enough to stay open, but as a senior I found the entrance fee outrageously expensive.

User

for 2 kids, 1 adult & 1 senior it’s very pricey. and when you get inside 90% of the animals are under veterinarian care or gone. the only animals that we enjoyed a lot are the pandas & the penguins that’s all. if you removed most of the animals or they are gone for whatever reasons at least maybe lower down the price. paying 125 for an empty zoo.

User

My family hasn’t been to the zoo in a few years. We were extremely disappointed for the value. It cost us over $200 in admission, that’s crazy! Yes, I get an annual pass is 2 visits but we rarely go. To not have a family pass of sorts, to accommodate larger families, is crazy! The dinosaur park was disappointing, the statues needing paint and attention. Boring to say the least. The washrooms were dirty, I had to advise an attendant. Very disappointed with our trip and don’t feel the value was there for what we paid. Disappointed, Calgary Zoo.

User

too expensive for a family! ticket prices keep going up and up shutting out average families that can not afford to go any longer! not worth it.

User

I am very disappointed that the zoo decided to separate Er Shun from her babies, the twins. The trip to Calgary was stressful enough on the sensitive Er Shun, and now this. Jia Panpan is not mature enough for his age and needs his mother's love and guidance. JIa Yueyue is ready and can manage this change. Er Shun is not due to be artificially inseminated until next spring and the twins are not being sent to China until 2019. So why this? Please reunite them.
