Town Of Stony Plain Description

Conveniently located only 17 kilometres west of Edmonton on Highway 16, Stony Plain is growing steadly with a current population of 17, 189.

In 1881 the first homestead was settled. In 1892, the area was known as Dog Rump Creek, until a post office was named for the region and it became Stony Plain. In 1907, Stony Plain's first Sheriff, Israel Umbach, made national headlines when he chained a locomotive to the railway tracks for non-payment of taxes, changing the course of history. Stony Plain was officially incorporated as a town in 1908.

The community offers a growing tourism industry and you can learn the Town's story through its murals, Multicultural Heritage Centre, and Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum.

Well known festivals and community events such as the Blueberry Bluegrass Festival, Aboriginal Days, and Alberta Culture Days can be enjoyed year round

Today, Stony Plain services a surrounding population of more than 70, 000 people. The Town has prospered, and continues to prosper, as an agricultural centre for trade. Diversification into government services and light manufacturing has set the stage for long-term steady growth.

Our residents enjoy a superior lifestyle - modern recreational facilities, three school jurisdictions, an extensive trail system, arts and cultural amenities and a vibrant, historic downtown core.
