Looking for a Winter 2019 Course? Mondays from 12:00 - 2:45.
Indigenous Studies 502: Reconciliation and the University (Winter 2019)
In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada issued its final report, including 94 Calls to Action, many of which are of direct relevance to colleges, universities, and professional schools. In 2017, The University of Calgary launched ii'taa'poh'to'p, its Indigenous Strategy, based on these calls to action. In this course, we will... look at the history of the TRC, its Calls to Action, and how post-secondary institutions have responded by focussing on indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation. This will be both a research-based and experiential course. Students will attend events locally, and we will meet to discuss contexts of reconciliation in Canada, and, in particular, how to implement both the TRC’s and other calls to action related to indigenous peoples and higher education. In addition, we will have the opportunity to interact with guests, many of whom have been involved in different ways in efforts to “indigenize” education, and who have a range of perspectives on how effective these efforts are.
Please contact course instructor Aruna Srivastava at asrivast[at]ucalgary[dot]ca for more information. The class is scheduled on Mondays 12:00 - 14:45.
