“I became a student leader because I love the community that residence provides. I have never seen a more welcoming and accepting place than I have while living in Lister. As an RA, you have a large influence in the dynamic of a community. I wanted to be an RA so I could provide the same environment that I had the opportunity to experience first year. Ultimately, I wanted to help people. I try to be kind to everyone I meet and really believe in helping others as much as you can. I saw the RA role as the best way I could support others.” –Carina, RA Schäffer Hall Over 200 positions available! Apply at bit.ly/WorkInResidence #ualberta

Why did you become a student leader in residence? “I became a student leader in residence because it is not easy being a first year living in residence and I wanted to change that to the best of my abilities. University is a crazy time of learning, growing and finding yourself and I wanted to be able to make that process easier for as many people as I can. I truly believe that a student leader can make a huge positive impact on an individual’s life and I wanted to be a part o...f that.” –Azhar, SRA HUB

Thank you for your decision to award Dr. David Suzuki an honorary degree here in Alberta and, especially, for standing firm in the face of so much nastiness and pressure from industry and those who have been hoodwinked by corporate shenanigans. The protection of intellectual freedom in our universities is paramount in this era of corporations policing themselves and the enormous amount of money they have to "prove" whatever makes them the most money. Their financial support for our universities is hugely problematic already, as we can see from the backlash you are currently experiencing. I hope this wakes us all up to the real need to protect the sovereignty of our education system, our researchers and our educators. Dr. Suzuki has, for decades, been a bright light in a dark time and has worked his entire life in support of this beautiful living planet and a healthy future for everyone. I will be so happy to come and celebrate the lifetime contributions of this amazing scientist and human being. Thank you.

Why would you give an award to someone who has made a fortune from denigrating an industry that maintains his lavish lifestyle to which he has become accustomed - an industry that makes the Canadian way of life possible?

User

Was a grad student for 2 years in a health related field, no pandering came really close to giving it up. Trying to do my best with therapy, workshops etc, but if something happened that I feel the need to yell depressing thoughts and high level bridge, I think any jury would imagine the appropriate response isnt to tear my bag up (both straps even after I complied), ruff my ribs and organs up, spleen keeps hurting but we ll see what the doc says. Worst part, couldn't even walk home properly with 2 ripped bags, no glasses on my face (shoving them in my backpack ain't the same as here are you glasses), and a bunch of meatheads reaching out handfuls of crystal meth the second I walk up to the shelter, where your rent a cops, paired with a real daddy thought it was accessible to drop a final year Masters in Public Health student. My father will hear about this so will student media relations, but hey, as long as you tell your boss you got it cheaper.

User

Very saddened by the fact that the u of a would pass an honorary degree on to a man that makes a living by basing his theories on false facts and is driven more by money that the truth. I will no longer support this school or recommend it to anyone. University of Calgary would be a better choice for albertans.

User

U of A will not get one cent more from me or my family...ever.

User

The choice made recently to award David Suzuki, a hypocrite and enemy of progress, an honorary degree is both shocking in its insensitivity and frankly insulting to the many donors from the energy sector which have made various programs possible across the years.

User

Really Suzuki the Landlord and oil patch money recipient on his own property jet setting around on the CBC dime try's to tell us we are living to wastefully. His carbon foot print would cover an island in the straits between BC's mainland and Vancouver Island. Does he really need a fake degree or is he paying you for it?

User

Quaecumque Vera means that Suzuki should automatically be disqualified from receiving an honorary degree. This will be remembered. Just look at a STARS air ambulance, and note their list of sponsors - includes so many oil companies, pipeline operators, mining companies - note NO Suzuki Foundation, NO Greenpeace, NO Tides.

Suzuki advocates JAILING those who hold a differing opinion on anthropogenic climate change - that is not science, that is totalitarian politics.

User

Out of touch. Entitled and extremely ignorant. I will do everything in my power to ensure every family member, friend and casual acquaintance seeks to find an alternative educational venue for themselves or their children. I will also encourage every single business I know that might be providing any kind of financial support to any U of A program to withdraw that funding immediately. If Dr. Turpin is so arrogant that he has no care for the opinion of Albertans on the David Suzuki honorary degree, then perhaps it’s time to force the board to remove such an idiot from a place of power.

User

Maybe you should manage your own food services rather than aramark and have say in what happens on campus

User

I will not recommend this university to even my worst enemy! U of A is to this date the biggest mistake of my life!

User

I used to be a proud U of A graduate...but now am just embarrassed...you have belittled this great institution with the awarding of the honorary degree on this traitor Suzuki

User

I can never recommend an institution that would bestow an honourary degree to a hypocrite like David Suzuki

User

I am a total advocate for free speech! I am also a total advocate for people being responsible for their speech. UofA is entitled to award honourary degrees as they see fit. We the public are entitled to condemn the award for Suzuki and stop any and all donations to a University that can’t understand why that is a bad idea!

You actually think we want our children to be educated by a University that promotes celebrities that erroneously attacks our Oil and Gas industry, our province and our citizens?

Cracker Jacks can offer a more reputable degree than UofA, after this fiasco!!

Giving that CBC muppet an honorary degree for his pseudo science is an insult to your alumni. What next, an honorary degree for Ronald McDonald for his science of the perfect Big Mac?

Please cease with the celebrity endorsers and the meaningless honorary degrees, even if it means a loss of donations from the CBC and it’s political backers .
