Very nice atmosphere and the food is delicious. I had the miso ramen and found it to be a little bit bland so maybe add more spices but everything tasted very very good. Reasonably priced and good service will def be back

User

Stopped in last night based on a friend's request for a snack after a long stroll in the Stampede ground. The place was busy by the time we got here, we had to wait for around 5 minutes before our table was ready.

I have been here quite a few times and will continue to keep coming back as everything you get here is just fantastic not to mention the friendly services and the warm atmosphere. We decided to order Beef Tataki, Calamari, a Pork Belly Bao, and of course a couple of super cold beers . The pork belly, same as the Chashu they use for their ramen, was cooked to its perfection and could explode with flavour and tenderness in both of my mouths. We didn’t order their special offer this time: the Blue Fin Tuna sashimi/sushi platter, but wanted to save it for my next visit with my Fatty Tuna Lover friends.

User

My wife has dragged me to every cornwr of this damned city to try every ramen place and this one is by FAR the best one ive been to so far! Cant wait to go back n challenge the mega!

User

My husband and I had the spicy korean ramen and the tuna masago don. The ramen was quite flavourful but the charsu was the star. It was delish. The amount of tuna that was in the tuna masago don was also quite impressive. Definitely more than what was expected. All in all, both dishes were quite tasty and we would definitely come back again. Good luck with your grand opening.

User

If you have the extra spending money, the main thing you need to know is that you can buy a soft shell crab burger with a side of high quality sushi and/or sashimi

User

I was in Calgary for the very first time and tried out various Asian foods in town. I was very impressed with Wami Ootoya's food quality especially its Black Garlic Ramen and sashimi. My sister ordered Tonkotsu and Calamari which were also excellent. We will definitely recommend this place to our friends who will be traveling to Calgary.

User

I am tentatively giving this restaurant a 5-star because it has the potential to be a very nice restaurant once they officially open, if they iron out some kinks. The food is delicious and the prices are comparable to similar establishments around the city. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the interior design is beautiful. Ootoya is certainly a much-needed alternative to the pubs and fast-food options in the area! I would like to point out some improvements that can make this place even better:

1) Please wait until the customer finishes before handing them the bill and asking for payment. In some cases, it is OK to give the bill first and say "no rush," but please do not bring the machine over when I am still eating. Standard practice is to check if everyone is done eating, ask if they want anything else, and then give the bill once everyone is satisfied. Not only does the mid-meal payment distract from the delicious food, it also discourages me from ordering desserts.

2) Become familiar with the menu! I know this is a soft opening, but in time, the wait staff should know the menu well and be familiar with what each dish contains.

3) Please inform the customer if something has run out before processing the order and bringing the food. We ordered a ramen with bamboo shoots, but when the dish came, there were no bamboo shoots in the bowl. After inquiring, we were told that the bamboo shoots have run out. In this case, this needs to be communicated to the customer beforehand. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that they did not purposely omit the item without telling me, because if that's the case then we have an issue with honesty. I paid money for the contents of the dish, so please do not simply omit an item that I paid for. Moreover, we had to ask whether we could get a replacement item for the bamboo shoots; this request should not have to come from the customer as the owners should have taken initiative in offering compensation for the missing item.

Overall, I hope this restaurant does well. The food is certainly promising and the energy of the staff is very positive. Hope to see steady improvements and a growing customer base!

Great ramen place.

Great ramen and don bowls. Friendly service. :)

User

Finally a good ramen place in the NW! Great food, nice atmosphere, fast and friendly service, very good value too! The ramen noodles are made in house and the sushi is always fresh. You can even customize your ramen bowl! The menu has a wide selection but not so much that it's overwhelming to decide lol. I highly recommend checking this place out, have a nice tasty bowl of authentic ramen along with sushi and alcoholic drink as you like and best part is I've never had wait in line just to sit in a small cramped seat like some other noodle joints.

User

Absolutely amazing! First the ambience and the service puts this restaurant above most in Calgary. Friendly staff, attentive and fun. The food is fantastic. Great ingredients, special rolls were great and the ramen was to die for. This place deserves more than 5 stars! Love it! Must try!!!!!!!

User

It was between 3&4, having said that potential for 5. The high point my dish was delicious, the saving grace my waiter was both friendly & apolegtic. Reasons for the 3 to 4 star rating: my dish took a look little longer than expected the beer I ordered I ask for a wedge of lime and it took him a while to find a knife to cut a lime. When my soft shell crab burger finally arrived , no cuiltery or napkins accommodated it - I first had to ask for a fork and then again for a napkin. My waiter as I said apologized each time and told me he normally doesn't work the bar area so he didn't know where things were. Not sure what the rationale of seating me in the bar area was since everyone else was seated in the dinning area. Still because the food was good and service was friendly I will not assainate this joint and am willing to go again.

User

Amazing broths for the ramen and great ramen selection! Also good call on having a lobster seasonal menu for lobster omakase (please deep fry instead of char grill the lobster on that menu option like the deluxe lobster ramne). Delicious tomato, garlic and lobster broths for those ramen items!

User

Went to lunch here with my work mates. I know if they were writing this review with me, most of them would not give Wami Ootoya the rating I did. We went during the lunch hour on a Tuesday or Thursday a few weeks ago when the restaurant was officially open.

The three bowls of ramen took over 35 minutes to arrive at our table and in the case of the three bento boxes, nearly 50 minutes. The meat portions of the bento boxes had gone cold by the time they arrive and for some inexplicable reason the tempura portions were piping hot. One of the people who ordered a bento box said that her salad had been topped with a strange mango flavored cream sauce when it should have been a vinaigrette like everyone else had been.

All very strange since we watched nearly 6 chefs running about preparing all the meals in the kitchen. To us, it seemed like the wait staff were spending more time upstairs at the ramen restaurant and when they did arrive back downstairs, it took them precious minutes sorting out what orders went where. They seemed more confused than anything else. We watched an order of tempura sit on the counter for nigh on ten minutes before it was taken to whatever table ordered it.

This wasn't the best run that the restaurant could have shown us. I had gone to Wami Ootoya once before during the soft open with only two of my coworkers. The service was a bit slower than I thought it should be for ramen and bento boxes but I still thought it arrived in a reasonable enough amount of time. This visit where all our coworkers came with us was undeniably terrible and they did make fun of us for having bad taste afterwards.

The only saving grace for me was the food. It was definitely good in my opinion. The others would not agree with me since the wait soured the taste of the food for them. I don't believe anything would change their opinion on how the food tasted.

I had the squid ink ramen which was different for me and was definitely flavorful and well cooked. I wouldn't say your food needs any improvement at all, but please, please change how the lunch service is run. I don't know if dinner service is better but something needs to be changed. That wait time was completely unacceptable especially since your lunch crowd is going to be primarily made up of the professionals working across the street from the university offices and the SMART building. 50 minutes is pretty much the entire lunch hour. I'm not sure if it was due to poor training, staffing issues or what, but I hope you manage to change it.

User

Service staff very friendly, but seemed like they were short staffed so wait was a bit long for tea and bill. The Poke salad did not look at all like in photo... needs to be improved. We love this location and often want to go as it is so close, I hope they keep up or improve on quality. We also tried the lobster special, would not have it again. Yam fries were good, both lobster and fries could have used a mayo sauce or similar. Lobster impossible to crack or eat with chopsticks. Will likely go back.

User

My favorite ramen place in Calgary. I've never gotten a bad meal or bad service from Wami. Highly recommended.

Edit: Sadly I have to downgrade my review from before. The service and food quality have seriously deteriorated as of late. I took my fiance there for Valentines day, and we received horrible service and the food was the worst Ive gotten from there. Followed up by taking some business colleagues this past Sunday, and the service again was abysmal. Was told we would get a free dish because we were over $50, and it never arrived. Appetizers came out after the Ramen too. I drive across town to go here, but sadly I just can no longer pass by the amazing Ramen places in Bridgland and Kensington to go here anymore.

User

Went with friends tonight and had a very negative experience. Our tab, for two adults and a child, including the mandatory 18% gratuity came to just about $70. The price isn't an issue, it's the fact that our rice was undercooked (three out of 5 dishes at the table had rice that was uncooked at it's center), ramen that was bland, sushi rolls that had no flavor aside from the Sciracca mayo on top and unapologetic staff.

The Coke was over-sweet (too much syrup was being mixed), the food was bland and undercooked and to top it off, the waiter, who was a nice guy, blamed it as a 'rice problem' saying "not my fault". Dude, come on, a 'sorry for the inconvenience' would have been nice. Oh, and the chicken wings still had feather hairs sticking out of them... great.

Won't be going back to this location and will suggest friends steer clear of it until they hire cooks who can cook.

User

Unfortunately, this was the worst ramen I've actually every had in my life. We ordered the squid ink seafood ramen and the Korean spicy ramen. Both lacked flavour and depth. It was like the pork bone base was not even added. I had to send back the squid ink ramen as it was missing 4 of the listed ingredients but it had some mystery ingredient that was not edible. Considering how they charged $16 a bowl, you can get quality ramen at many other places for around the same price or less. The only reason I gave an extra star as the server was very good. The restaurant was chaotic though. Seems to lack proper management as all the staff were running around like headless chickens. 3 plates were dropped and shattered during our visit. The owner even rudely interrupted the server midway through our order. Sorry but we won't be back.

User

They were kind enough to give us a restaurant credit. Ordered takeout and the curry ramen was a mess in tinfoil, disgusting, and the besides the chashu, the tomato ramen tasted like instant noodles. I could have done better for a lot less for all of it.

They were kind enough to give us a restaurant credit. Ordered takeout and the curry ramen was a mess in tinfoil, disgusting, and the besides the chashu, the tomato ramen tasted like instant noodles. I could have done better for a lot less for all of it.

Very nice atmosphere and the food is delicious. I had the miso ramen and found it to be a little bit bland so maybe add more spices but everything tasted very very good. Reasonably priced and good service will def be back

My wife has dragged me to every cornwr of this damned city to try every ramen place and this one is by FAR the best one ive been to so far! Cant wait to go back n challenge the mega!

If you have the extra spending money, the main thing you need to know is that you can buy a soft shell crab burger with a side of high quality sushi and/or sashimi
