#OnThisDay1968 The Bow Valley Crag & Canyon #Whyte50
"Banff Crag & Canyon -- Wed. Nov. 27, 1968
ENTHUSIASM for Stampeders in Saturday's Grey Cup Game is reflected in this legend, stamped out by a supporter in the snows covering the second Vermilion Lake. Bruno Engler took this photo."

A cynical Buffalo Bill, played by Paul Newman hires Sitting Bull (Frank Kaquitts) to exploit him and add credibility to the distorted view of history presented in his Wild West Show. Sitting Bull’s request for authenticity however, threatens to throw a wrench into Buffalo Bill’s plan.

Since the Whyte Museum began collecting and organizing heritage and archival materials in 1968, the terminology referring to the Indigenous peoples of Canada has evolved, and continues to do so. Please note that materials can be found with various titles and descriptions as a result.

Hans Gmoser takes us through the early days of heli-skiing in the Bugaboos, including fabulous footage of Jim Davies’ helicopter sailing through the peaks. The film also includes exciting scenes of Mount Norquay.

This museum is a gem. We were very impressed. History, art and environment.

I visited for the first time this January. It was bigger than I had expected and the staff were very friendly. We went on the Heritage Homes tour and I really enjoyed going into the old houses. The tour added some interesting background information to the visit. I also thought it was a nice touch that pictures from the archives were found throughout the building.

I have just come home from visiting the Whyte in Banff to see the current show..... again (fifth time).

The shows currently up at the Whyte Museum in Banff are stellar. the Whyte persistently "knocks it out of the park" and I have been sad for many years that NO ONE comes to Banff to review what the Whyte does. It is an amazing museum, world class exhibits. The current shows — Deb Cameron's magnificent photographs that will intrigue and challenge any viewer and a big and important show in the main gallery of 19th C and 20th C woodblock prints and miniature constructions that rival any of the work in have seen in Japan: elegant, technically precise, and loaded with cultural history. every art history class in Calgary should be making a field trip to Banff. The shows have been up for over a month - definitely worth an afternoon at the Museum. There are only a few weeks left.

I have been to regional museums all over Europe and Asia and have seen only none that real the Whyte that represents regional interests with wonderfully high standards of artistic expression and presentation.

Is there anyone out there with a penchant for writing well about challenging, beautifully curated shows? Encourage them to attend the Whyte Museum and write about the work. The Whyte certainly deserves a few raves! Some interested arts writer should visit the Whyte regularly and submit articles to major Canadian papers, at least! Someone could carve out a personal niche - there is definitely an opening for someone with incentive.

The Whyte also hosts a number of other interesting events worth attending.

Very interesting. Confused about touring the heritage houses and did not get to see them as info about tours was not obvious. Daughter liked that it was interactive. Low admission price was nice.
