Willmore Wilderness Foundation Trail Crews packed up and left Willmore Wilderness Park yesterday on a snowy ride home. Crews began their work on July 3, 2018 during high water. We covered many miles and will share our stories and accomplishments in the near future. Heavy snows brought down trees, which promises more work for the Foundation in the coming years.

The Willmore Wilderness Foundation did a lot of trail clearing in Willmore Wilderness Park this summer. Our latest trip took us up Mt. Stearn. This is one of many trail clearing initiatives that the Foundation undertook to improve the trail network in Improvement District #25

Payton Hallock constructed this outhouse out of natural materials when we were camped at Zenda Creek in Willmore Wilderness Park. It is a big improvement over the old one. Thanks Payton for your hard work.

The Willmore Wilderness Foundation headed up the Berland River to Adam's Creek camp, Sunset Meadows, over to Jackknife Pass, up Zenda Creek and over to Big Graves.
We were proud to support People & Peaks Productions, who were filming their latest documentary, "The Forgotten People". It focuses on sharing the stories of people from long ago, by honouring and restoring their Spirit Houses in the Willmore.

This photo was taken by Caroline Hinman in August 1915, when she photographed her friend Mary Jobe standing in front of an wickiup. This story was published in Women of Willmore Wilderness. (v282-pg 70.1 Photo courtesy of Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies).
In 1915 Caroline Hinman’s packtrip ran into an unknown wikiup on the Muddy Water River. It was later realized that it was Asa Hunting and Mildred Shaw’s 1913-1914 winter camp. In July of 1913 information had been laid ...before the North West Mounted Police that Hunting had kidnapped Mildred Shaw, 15-year-old daughter of a homesteader near Beaverlodge, Alberta. A warrant had been issued for Hunting’s arrest but before it could be served the mountain man had disappeared into the rugged foothills, taking the girl with him.

One of the strangest cases in the annals of the Royal North West Mounted Police began on October 3, 1913 with a short telegram from Supt. A.E.C. McDonell, Athabasca, Alberta to Staff Sergeant C.S. Harper in charge of Lake Saskatoon detachment near Grande Prairie. It advises him that a man known as Asa Hunting had been seen in Porcupine (Kakwa) country that lay in the semi-mountainous area between Grande Cache and the northern boundary of Jasper National Park. It ordered him t...o apprehend the said Asa Hunting.
Check out the story of the North West Mounted Polices' BIGGEST MANHUNT in the history of Alberta in the latest edition of the Willmore Wilderness Newsletter. This photo courtesy of the Glenbow Museum, PA-331-1. From Left to Right: Asa Hunting, Guide Richard Harrington, Mildred Shaw, Constable F. Stevenson and Sgt CS Harper. The photo was taken in Grande Cache December 1913 with Grande Mountain in the background. The story can be read in detail at http://willmorewilderness.com/newsletter/
