Ymap Southeast Description
What is YMAP?
The YMCA Achievement Program (YMAP) engages culturally diverse youth by providing opportunities to develop work and life skills with support from mentors and peers.
There are three YMAP streams:
Explorers - recommended for recently arrived newcomers to Canada who are in need of more support integrating into their new community. This program offers an introduction to Canada, Calgary, and concepts of peer pressure and bullying. In the summer, students have the opportunity to receive an honorarium for attending summer school and volunteering in the community. Sessions run on Tuesdays.
Achievers - recommended for level 3 and 4 ESL students. This stream concentrates on employment and leadership skills. Students will complete the equivalent of the CTR 1010 portfolio (resume, cover letter, mock interview). Sessions run on Wednesday.
Leaders - for those who have completed Achievers and are still in high school and want to continue on their YMAP experience. The Leaders program focuses more on issues affecting teens in their city, as well as encourages exploring post-secondary options, volunteering, and leadership and communication skills. Sessions run on Thursdays.
