Youth Restorative Action Project

About Youth Restorative Action Project

YRAP is a pro-active program, by youth for youth, mandated to work in the Provincial Youth Court with young people. YRAP also runs several youth centred programming designed to empower young people in the community.

Youth Restorative Action Project Description

YRAP is a Youth Justice Committee that is sanctioned to work in Provincial Court with young people who have caused harm as a result of racism, intolerance or significant social issues. It is the only committee worldwide with this unique mandate to be run entirely by youth members (aged 15-24). YRAP performs numerous legal functions including sentencing and extrajudicial sanctions, custody release plans, treatment plans, the supervision of community service and probation orders and mediation. By meeting with the accused and the victim, YRAP devises proactive solutions under the principles of restorative justice designed to be educational and rehabilitative, and address social impairments underlying criminal behaviour. The committee has handled 500 hundred cases, many previously unthinkable under this model, including sexual assault and even homicide.
